962 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: Operation Highjump 1946-47: The Waite Cachet, airmail envelope addressed by Waite to his daughter in New Jersey endorsed from “SCOTT ISLAND, ANTARCTICA”, franked 17c. and Air 5c. cancelled by U.S.S. “Mount Olympus” duplex, with Operation Highjump cachet in purple and at left the original special cachet in black showing two penguins and crossed flags created from a linoleum block and with “S.C.E.L.” (Signal Corps Expedition Leader) straight line below. In his long career Amory Hooper ‘Bud’ Waite Jr. (1902-1985) participated in eleven expeditions to the Antarctic and twelve expeditions to the Arctic regions between 1933 and 1965. As a radio operator during the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition, he gained national recognition as one of the three men who rescued Admiral Richard E. Byrd from the Bolling Advance Weather Base. During Operation Highjump Waite acted as an observer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Cape Waite and the Waite Islands are named after him.
