960 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-16: Expedition stationery envelope addressed by Ernest Shackleton to William Wilkins Hewitt in Dedham, England with violet double oval datestamp “30 OCT 1914” of R.M.S.P. ship S.S. “Andes” and bearing Great Britain 1d. cancelled on arrival by “LONDON/PAQUEBOT/NOV 15 14” machine, flap missing and opening tear at top. With accompanying 1981 letter of opinion from Alan Rawlings to Denis Vandervelde. During World War I “Andes” was co-opted to the Royal Navy, refitted as an armed merchant cruiser and served as a convoy escort as part of Tenth Cruiser Squadron. The “Endurance” sailed from Buenos Aires on Oct. 26 and arrived at South Georgia on Nov. 5, departing the island on Dec. 5 en route to the Weddell Sea and its watery destiny. Photo. (Image1)

961 c, entire, etc. imageAntarctica: Operation Highjump 1946-47: The Waite Cachet, airmail envelope addressed by Waite to his son in New Jersey endorsed “AT THE SOUTH POLE,/ROSS BARRIER, 78°S 164°W/JAN 1, 1947” with signature, franked 17c. and Air 5c. cancelled by U.S.S. “Mount Olympus” duplex, with Operation Highjump cachet in purple and at left the original special cachet in black showing two penguins and crossed flags created from a linoleum block and with “S.C.E.L.” (Signal Corps Expedition Leader) straight line below. In his long career Amory Hooper ‘Bud’ Waite Jr. (1902-1985) participated in eleven expeditions to the Antarctic and twelve expeditions to the Arctic regions between 1933 and 1965. As a radio operator during the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition, he gained national recognition as one of the three men who rescued Admiral Richard E. Byrd from the Bolling Advance Weather Base. During Operation Highjump Waite acted as an observer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Cape Waite and the Waite Islands are named after him.
