H.M.S Hawke Malta” and “Photo with care” countersigned by commanding officer at lower left, franked 1885 1/2d. green pair tied by “A25” duplex and taxed as content disallowed with circular “T/CENTIMES ‘40’” mark and London Foreign Branch “8D/F.B.” mark, unusual, with part “PADDINGTON W.” c.d.s. on the reverse also real-photographic postcard of the ship sent from Portland in 1905. “Hawke” was an early victim in World War I, torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea on Oct. 15 1914 by German submarine U-9.
