1228 c, entire, etc. imageMalta: Army and Navy Concession Rate Mail: 1812 (Jan. 3) entire letter (file fold) to Glasgow endorsed “From John Abercromby Soldier in Capt/Whitaker’s Company 1st Battalion 21st R(oyal) S(cots) F(usiliers)”, countersigned by commanding officer at lower left and with red scroll “PAID/MALTA” mark and framed Glasgow arrival datestamp. The letter (typed transcript included) to the writer’s father and brother and datelined at Messina (London G.P.O. Instruction of Aug. 13 1811 extended privilege to forces in Sicily who remained active there during the Napoleonic Wars) “...the inhabitants of this place had formed a conspiracy against us and was [sic] intending to have carried off our Gun Boats to the French...” and “The milk and butter is (sic) very dear but we use olive oil instead....” and probably carried on “Princess Charlotte” to Falmouth.
