3083 c, entire, etc. imageSamoa: 1868, lengthy and interesting entire letter, sent privately or as an enclosure, headed “Malua Samoa May 19 1868” and addressed to Rev. Henry Nisbet c/o Mission House in London with pencil note recording arrival on Oct. 31. Rev. George Turner LLD (1818-1876), a missionary of the London Missionary Society, left England for the Pacific Islands in 1840. He reached Samoa from Sydney in Aug. 1841, and proceeded to Tanna, New Hebrides. However, in Jan. 1843, he, Rev. Nisbet and their families were obliged to leave due to the uprising against their mission and were brought to Samoa. Turner’s “Nineteen Years in Polynesia: Missionary Life, Travels, and Researches in the Islands of the Pacific” was published in 1861, his “Samoa A Hundred Years Ago and Long Before, 1884.” in 1884.
