Samoa

3074 c, entire, etc. imageSamoa: 1843, small folded internal letter from fellow missionary Thomas Bullen at Valee, Upolu addressed to “Rev. H. Nisbet/Apia”, having heard that Nisbet was “now at Apia having been compelled to flee from Tana”. Reverend Henry Nisbet, LLD (1818-1876), a missionary of the London Missionary Society, left England for the Pacific Islands in August 1840. He reached Samoa from Sydney in August 1841, and went to Tanna, New Hebrides, in the following June where he remained until the end of Jan. 1843 when he, Rev. Turner and their families were picked up by the “Highlander” due to the uprising against their mission and brought to Samoa. Bullen was an experienced missionary, knowledgeable on local customs and maladies, but became ill in Mar. 1848 and died at the age of 32. Photo. (Image1)

George Pratt (1817–1894), missionary with the London Missionary Society lived in Samoa for 40 years from 1839 to 1879, mostly on the island of Savai'i and was the first person to document the Samoan Language. Henry Nisbett/Sapopalin/Savaii/Samoa”, some staining but interesting contents – “It is very pleasing to hear that the war is at an end & we hope your fears may be disappointed as to it breaking out again”. Rev. Alexander Chisholm (1814-1862), missionary with the London Missionary Society, arrived in Tahiti in Mar. 1843 but his appointment was changed to Samoa. He and his wife arrived at Upolu in Apr. 1843, and settled at Salailua, Savai’i. In Nov. 1845, they moved to Sapapalii and by arrangement of the Samoan Committee were instructed to join the Tahiti Mission, leaving Samoa in Dec. 1846. Photo. (Image1)
