990 c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: 1824 (Feb. 25) large part entire sent from London to Cumberland with red crowned “FREE” datestamp with endorsement signature for free carriage of “James Graham”, an unusual connection to the ‘father’ of the territory. Sir James Robert George Graham, 2nd Baronet GCB PC (1792–1861) served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1830 to 1834. Graham Land, named in his honour by John Biscoe after its discovery in 1832, is the closest part of Antarctica to South America and, up until the British Graham Land Expedition of 1934-37, generally thought to be an archipelago rather than a peninsula.
