Farrington, expedition Senior Wireless Operator, to his wife in Manchester from a civilian post office in Portsmouth franked 21/2d. with Portsmouth & Southsea machine cancellation. Lacking full power and showing signs of leaks, “Bransfield” was forced to put into Portsmouth for repairs, staying for about a week before heading onward to Falmouth to collect two further members of the expedition. Flett to the Governor, Port Stanley, appropriately franked by South Shetlands 2d. to pay the double 1-2oz rate, cancelled on the first day of operation of the Base B post office, carried by HMS “William Scoresby”, arriving at Stanley on Mar. 1. Under cover of political secrecy, Capt. Victor Marchesi conveyed the cover personally to the Governor, bypassing the Stanley post office. The Governor allowed overseas and ‘proving’ mail to be transmitted onward but private local mail was otherwise nor released until Mar. 6 when it was datestamped. Photo. (Image1)

Farrington, expedition Senior Wireless Operator, to his wife in Manchester with large “POST/OFFICE/MARITIME/MAIL” in red and redirected to York with Stretford May 26 1944 machine datestamp. Farrington remained at Port Lockroy between Feb. 12 1944 and Mar. 1945 and it is unclear whether this cover was mailed during his journey south and suffered delay, or was carried unstamped by an unknown ship, normal base mailing procedures having been bypassed.
