The Guadalajara Collection - January 21, 2021

With 89 lots, valued between £100 and £50,000 the “Guadalajara” Collection of 1866-68 Provisional issues from the State of Guadalajara, assembled by a prominent philatelist, is one of the finest collections formed of these fascinating issues. Most lots boasting an impressive Provenance and almost all with MEPSI Certificates, this collection will be a valued reference for collectors for many years to come. A highlight of the sale is lot 1035 an 1867 (22 May) entire letter from Colima to Zamora, bearing First Printing Serrated roulette 1r. on blue quadrille paper, 2r. on green quadrille paper and 4r. on white wove paper. The stamps applied and cancelled in transit. The only recorded cover bearing the 4r. serrate roulette and generally considered to be one of the most important items of Mexican Philately. Highlights:
  • Highlight 1 - Mexico. Provisional Issues, 1866-68, Guadalajara. 1867 First Printing, Wove Paper, Serrate Roulette. 1867 (22 May), entire letter from Colima, forwarded to Guadalajara and then to Zamora, franked 4r. on white paper, double perf. variety, 1r. blue oblong quadrillé and 2r. on thin green quadrillé, all tied by oval dispatch handstamps. One of only two covers recorded bearing the 4r. Serrate Roulette, the most important cover of the Gaudalajara Provisional Postmasters issues and a unique three colour franking of the Serrate issues. Considered to be one of the most important items of Mexican Philately. (Lot 1035)
  • Highlight 2 - Mexico. Provisional Issues, 1866-68, Guadalajara. 1867 Third Printing, Wove Paper, Serrate Roulette. 2r. on rose, fine used. The only recorded example, a tremendous rarity, unknown unused. (Lot 1057)
  • Highlight 3 - Mexico. Provisional Issues, 1866-68, Guadalajara. 1867 Third Printing, Wove Paper, Serrate Roulette. 4r. on blue, central "franco en/guadalajara" cancellation; fine. The only recorded example. Another tremendous rarity, unknown unused. (Lot 1058)
  • Highlight 4 - Mexico. Provisional Issues, 1866-68, Guadalajara. 1867 Third Printing, Imperforate, Quadrillé Paper. 1p. on white, unused; fine. The only recorded example. An exceptional rarity, otherwise unknown unused. (Lot 1062)
