166 Used   imageMexico. 1864 "Eagles". Morelia Duo of very fresh, attractive, and most likely unique 8r. red singles from the 2nd and 3rd Periods (#141 and #220-1864), sent to small sub-offices and postally used. Neither bears the blue remainder cancel. Both with margins all around, though #220 slightly cuts in at top right. The 2nd Period stamp (#141) shows two sub-numbers, implying a rare re-subconsignment or "habilitado" situation, and although the 3rd Period stamp (#220) bears only one visible sub-consignment number, another may be hidden under the cancel. Only 100 8r. stamps were issued per consignment, so they are rare even without the sub-office overprint. The very few sent to sub-offices (5–10 to each of three or four offices) are often unique. The #141-1864 shows subs #6-1864 and #13-1865, due to a re-subconsignment situation involving Pátzcuaro, Taretan, Tacámbaro, and Morelia. The 3rd Period stamp (#220-1864, sub 13) is probably in a similar situation involving Tacámbaro, Ario, Morelia, and Taretan. None of these stamps bears a blue remainder cancel, confirming postal use. Scott 25a, $900. (Image)

168   imageMexico. 1864 "Eagles". Saltillo 8r. Red (#181-1864), 3rd Period, complete to mainly ample margins, tied to Dec. 3, 1864 registered front from Parras to San Luis Potosí. At most ten registered items are recorded in this issue. Registered mail is very scarce, as postal regulations required the front of the cover to be cut out and signed by the addressee as proof of delivery, then returned to the office of dispatch, where it was to be kept for two years before being destroyed. 2025 MEPSI certificate. Scott 25a. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

169   imageMexico. 1864 "Eagles". San Luis Potosí 2r. yellow, 1st Period, tied to an attractive entire letter dated July 21, 1864, from San Luis Potosí to Parras. Across-the-lines usage, as Parras at that time was under Juárez’s army control and the stamp was not recognized as valid. A "sello negro" marking "2" indicates that the addressee had to pay postage due. Scott 23b. (Image)

British crayon markings in orange (11) and blue (4) for British dues. Folds not affecting the stamp and some ink etching, not detracting from the beauty of this cover. Signed JK Bash. Scott 23. Note: A very similar cover (maybe this one) is mentioned by David Pietsch on page 374 of his "Eagles" handbook. This cover was acquired by H. Strauss in 1964. A similar example sold for $210 at auction in November 1973. (Image)
