71   imageMexico. 1856 "Hidalgos". Pachuca 1r. yellow, 2r. green, 4r. red, and 8r. lilac, all tied to a registered front from Pachuca to Mexico City, dated April 12, 1860. The scarce 4r. and 8r. have tight margins and are slightly cut at the bottom; only 951 of the 8r. were issued. The 1r. and 2r. were cut when the front was removed from the wrapper, not detracting from this spectacular and very rare four-colour franking. Postal regulations required that for registered mail, the front be cut out, signed by the addressee, and returned to the office of origin. After two years it was destroyed, which explains the small number surviving today. This is most likely unique from this district. 2025 MEPSI certificate; NF $850 for the high values off-cover. Scott 2-5. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

74   imageMexico. 1856 "Hidalgos". Puebla ½r. Blue, two attractive covers, both sent to Puebla and each with a pair from small towns with superb h.s cancels: Matamoros and Tecamachalco. The Tecamachalco is an entire letter dated March 8, 1858. The h.s does not tie but the full letter proves the stamps originated in this cover. The Matamoros cover is dated May 24, 1857. Both are very scarce as they were small towns. Scott 1. (Image)
