30005 S.G. 2 image1840 1d Black, Plate 1a (TA–TL) Complete Lower Row of Twelve on Large Format Legal Cover — Utmost Rarity An exceptionally rare and striking entire, this cover from Glasgow to Edinburgh bears the complete lower row of twelve (TA–TL), each tied by red Maltese Cross cancellations. Margins are clear to very large except at the top of TA. Typical archive folds cross some stamps, with light creasing, but the cover remains in superb display condition. The cover is backstamped with Glasgow 23 June 1840 dispatch and Edinburgh 24 June 1840 arrival markings, further enhancing its historical interest. A marvellous and visually dramatic item, representing a complete bottom row on the cover of the utmost rarity, unmatched in its combination of scale, condition, and provenance. Notable plate varieties are present: HL shows re-entry (S.G. Spec. AS14a), while KJ–KK display the “NE” of “ONE” nearly joined (S.G. Spec. AS14e). The block bears minor faults, including a small closed tear on KJ and a light crease across JJ–JL, noted for accuracy. 30014 O S.G. 2 imageSpectacular Horizontal Strip of Twelve of Plate 3 1840 1d Black, Plate 3, in an exceptional complete horizontal strip of twelve (positions JA–JL). The stamps display a remarkably fresh and deep colour, with clear to good margins all round notably impressive for a multiple of this magnitude, with only a very close margin at the left. Each stamp is struck with a crisp red Maltese Cross cancellation, evenly applied across the strip, greatly enhancing both visual impact and desirability. Minor archival creasing, consistent with original postal use, has been professionally pressed out. The piece was almost certainly used on a large-format legal letter, representing a twelve-pence franking for correspondence weighing up to six ounces—an impressive and rarely encountered rate. The overall appearance is outstanding, combining scale, freshness, and historical significance. A magnificent and highly important Penny Black multiple, seldom offered and rarely surpassed. An outstanding and highly desirable usage, the horizontal strip of four is affixed to a cover from Bedford dated 1 February 1841, addressed to Booth’s Distillery, London. Each stamp is superbly cancelled by crisp red Maltese Crosses, and all examples display large to enormous margins, greatly enhancing the visual impact of this impressive multiple. The cover is in extremely fine condition and represents a rare survival of a large multiple on cover, combining freshness, clarity, and strong exhibition appeal.
