Batavia. 1868, 10 cent red six singles on mourning envelope from Batavia to Montpellier, France. A few stamps are without faults but most have defects; stamps tied to cover by half-round franco cancel Batavia 24.6 1870 with an additional
strike on the envelope. Red “PD” for full prepayment to destination, and also red circular “Ind. Neer. V. Suez P. An. A. Mar.” (Salles I.892) 7.8 1870, indicating mail originating in Batavia routed via Suez for Marseille. On reverse is Montpellier
arrival 7.8 1870 and blue crayon “60” confirming the full prepaid amount.
IN SPITE OF OBVIOUS FLAWS, A GREAT RARITY OF THE SECOND ISSUE AND OF EARLY NEI PRE-UPU MAIL ABROAD.
Six letters are known from the Bonnet correspondence from Batavia to Montpellier, of which 3 are bearing the 1868 issue (one in a mixed franking with the 1870 issue); all letters are predate UPU membership. This letter was carried by British packets,
and the rate of 60c to France probably only lasted till October 1870 when the Marseille route was closed for British mail. (Image 1)

POSTMARKS AND THE POSTAGE DUE CHARGE. A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL AND A STUNNING EXHIBITION ITEM OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.
Letter sent within Benkoelen, Sumatra west coast, to a Chinese resident with address written in Malay/Melayu and in Arabic. Written notation in Malay “trima 25 julij 1870”, received 25 July 1870, indicating same day delivery. Postal notation
