20021   image1864 Mourning Cover – Larnaca to Salonique via Smyrna Scarce mourning envelope sent from Larnaca to Salonique via Smyrna, franked with Lombardy–Venetia 15 soldi brown, tied by a clear LARNACA DI CIPRO / 27.5 circular datestamp. The reverse bears a black LLOYD AGENZIE / SMIRNE transit cachet and a blue LLOYD AGENZIE / SALONICH arrival cachet, documenting its carriage through the Austrian Lloyd postal network. 20022   image1865 Disinfected Lettersheet – Austrian Levant & Greece Combination Franking Rare disinfected folded lettersheet sent from Larnaca via Smyrna to Athens, franked with a pair of Austrian Levant 1864 Arms 10 soldi blue stamps, tied by a faint but clear LARNACA DI CIPRO / 2.10 circular datestamp. On arrival in Athens, a Greece 20 lepta stamp was applied, creating a highly attractive and scarce combination franking. The cover bears an array of transit and arrival backstamps, including LLOYD AGENZIE / SMIRNE / 5.10, and shows the characteristic disinfection slits applied during quarantine. A very fine and exceptionally rare example of Austrian Levant postal history, combining disinfected mail, Austrian Lloyd transport, and Greek destination franking. 20027   imageA unique mixed franking combination used in Cyprus 1868 (Dec 23), Envelope from Larnaca to Lons-le-Saunier, Jura, France, bearing Lombardy-Venetia 1864 Arms 15 s. brown perf. 9½ in combination with Austrian Levant 1867 Coarse whiskers 25 s. grey-lilac, two fresh examples with good perforation, the Arms adhesive with a minor scratch at right not mentioned on any of the certificates, tied by "LARNACA DI CIPRO 23 / 12" cds (Tranmer fig. 3) in the typical brownish black, "P.D." in brownish red and French "AUTRICHE - LANSLEBOURG AMB 2 JANV. 69" entry cds in red alongside, reverse with Bureau de Passage '1307' and LONS-LE-SAUNIER arrival (Jan 3, 69) cds. An amazing combination cover, the 40 soldi franking paying correctly the 1857 rate to France with 15 soldi for the Lloyd and 25 soldi for France, according to our research only two mixed frankings between the Lombardy-Venetia issues and the Austrian Levant issues exist on cover used in Cyprus, both originate from the same correspondence to France. The combination 25 s. + 15 s. and the other 10 s. + 15 s. (pair) are both unique and mentioned in the Castle Handbook. A major Cyprus rarity. Expertise: Certificates E. Diena (1991) and A. Goller BPP (2023), Provenance: V.H. Richardson (Robson Lowe, 6 July 1960, lot 27) where also the other known mixed franking cover was offered, Rivolta (Harmers International Lugano, 13-14 February 1992, "Levante", lot 549) and Hassan Shaida. Camp Cyprus – Rosati". An important contemporary record of the Indian Expeditionary Force following the British occupation of Cyprus in 1878, providing rare documentary evidence of the establishment of the British Administration on the island. A historically significant and highly desirable item. Note: The Indian Expeditionary Force arrived in Cyprus in July 1878 following the Cyprus Convention, which placed the island under British administration. Composed largely of British Indian Army troops, the force landed at Larnaca, established military camps, and secured British control. Disease and harsh conditions led to most Indian troops returning later that year. (Image 1)
