20259   imageOverland Desert Mail — First Month of Service 5 June 1929. Registered cover from Limassol to India, franked with the 1924–28 issue: 2pi black (two), ½pi green and 2½pi, together with the 1928 50th Anniversary of British Rule 1pi and 1½pi values. All are cancelled by oval Limassol Registered datestamps. The cover bears the compulsory white label “Service Transdesertique / Syro-Iraquien Damas-Bagdad”. The 7pi postage included the additional 3pi fee for conveyance by the overland desert motor service operated by the Nairn Eastern Transport Company. Introduced in June 1929, the service considerably reduced transit time, but the high surcharge limited its use; the additional fee was abolished in 1930. A scarce cover carried during the first month of the Cyprus desert-mail service. Unclaimed and returned to sender, with transit and return backstamps from India and Egypt. Some staining below the address, otherwise fine. Provenance: Christopher Cruttwell. (Image 1) (Image 2)
