20201   imageThe Cypriot Bishops’ Conflict of 1909 c1908 (1.12) Telegram from the Greek Parliamentarians Rozos, Vondizianos, Theodotan, Chacalli, Kyriakides and Sozos (as they appear on the telegram) of Cyprus, addressed to the Patriarch of Jerusalem, requesting his help to sove the ecclesiastical problem for the election of a new archbishop of Cyprus. Important historical and ecclesiastical document Note: The Cypriot Bishops’ Conflict (1900–1909), also known as the Archiepiscopal Question, was a prolonged dispute over the election of the Archbishop of Cyprus after Archbishop Sophronios III died. Rival bishops Kyrillos of Kition and Kyrillos of Kyrenia each claimed the position, dividing Cypriot society and involving the Patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, and Jerusalem. The conflict ended in 1909 with the election of Kyrillos II as Archbishop, followed by reconciliation in 1910. (Image 1)

20202   imageThe Cypriot Bishops’ Conflict of 1909 This folded entire, mailed on 4 July 1908 from the Mukhtar of Komi Kebir to the Governor of Famagusta, was posted during the final stages of the Cypriot Bishops’ Conflict (1900–1909). Franked with a King Edward VII ½ piastre stamp cancelled by the Rural Service VR/Komi Kebir handstamp and backstamped Famagusta A, 4 July 1908, the enclosed letter protests British Government regulations concerning the election of the new Archbishop of Cyprus. The Mukhtar argues that the appointment of the Archbishop was solely an ecclesiastical matter, governed by the ancient canons and traditions of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, and should remain free from colonial administrative interference. 20214   imageCyprus Railway Travelling Post Office - RPO No.10 This attractive black-and-white real photographic postcard, depicting a romantic scene, was mailed to Nicosia and franked with a King George V 10 para stamp. It is cancelled with the scarce Travelling Post Office (T.P.O.) handstamp "R.P.O. * CYPRUS * No. 10" (Type 36), used aboard the Cyprus Government Railway.
