50073   image1851 Double-Weight Money Letter – London U.C. “PAID” / “MONEY LETTER” Double-weight wrapper addressed to Vittoria, via Brantford and Simcoe (both backstamped), bearing red LONDON U.C., APR 15 1851 circular datestamp, with red “PAID” and “MONEY LETTER” handstamps, endorsed “Paid”, with arrival backstamp. Very fine; the only recorded money letter from the Pence period before stamp issuance. Provenance: Wilkinson Note: Before the introduction of registration in Canada, a system of money letters was used. Letters carrying money received special markings on the letter bills, and a receipt was required upon delivery. No other protection existed, and the system operated during the first four years of the Pence period. There was no charge for money letters. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Very fine. One of the earliest registered covers in Canada, from the first month of official registration. Note: Registration in Canada commenced on 1 May 1855. The fee was 1d, prepaid in cash, and a certificate of registration was issued on request. No insurance or indemnity applied until 1904. Only items with the letter fee of 3d paid could be registered.
