50073   image1851 Double-Weight Money Letter – London U.C. “PAID” / “MONEY LETTER” Double-weight wrapper addressed to Vittoria, via Brantford and Simcoe (both backstamped), bearing red LONDON U.C., APR 15 1851 circular datestamp, with red “PAID” and “MONEY LETTER” handstamps, endorsed “Paid”, with arrival backstamp. Very fine; the only recorded money letter from the Pence period before stamp issuance. Provenance: Wilkinson Note: Before the introduction of registration in Canada, a system of money letters was used. Letters carrying money received special markings on the letter bills, and a receipt was required upon delivery. No other protection existed, and the system operated during the first four years of the Pence period. There was no charge for money letters. (Image 1) (Image 2)

50076   image1852–57 3d Red on Medium Wove – Early Registered Cover 3d red on medium wove paper, fine to large margins, tied by blue concentric circles on entire from BURFORD, C.W., MY 18 1855 circular datestamp, with the second digit of the day added in ink, endorsed “Money”, and struck with a red “REGISTERED” handstamp, addressed to Hamilton. Very fine. One of the earliest registered covers in Canada, from the first month of official registration. Note: Registration in Canada commenced on 1 May 1855. The fee was 1d, prepaid in cash, and a certificate of registration was issued on request. No insurance or indemnity applied until 1904. Only items with the letter fee of 3d paid could be registered. Routed via Brockville, Montreal, New York, carried on Cunard “Persia” via Liverpool, London to Brighton, then re-addressed with 1d red watermark Large Crown, white paper, perf. 14 pl.57 tied by Brighton sideways duplex to Richmond (Surrey). This represents the 10d letter rate via New York or Boston to the United Kingdom valid from February 1856. An outstanding item of the highest quality in colour, impression and margins. The 7½d rate via Canadian Line was valid from May 1856. This cover is notable as an early usage from the Decimal Period.
