1859 Parliamentary Free Frank with 10d Blue – Mowat Cover to Scotland
Small neat envelope sent by Oliver Mowat (later Postmaster General, 1863–64) during a Parliament session in Toronto, bearing a red LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY / FEBRUARY 14, 1859 handstamp. Franked with 1852–57 10d blue on medium to thick wove paper, outer
frameline just shaved at lower left otherwise clear to large margins, tied by Toronto Grid. Routed via Cunard “America”, through Boston, arriving Liverpool 8 March 1859, then to Lanark, Scotland, arriving MR 9.
Pays the 10d Cunard rate for a letter sent via Boston and New York to the United Kingdom, valid from February 1856.
