ONLY RECORDED (?) 1d BLACK COVER SENT FROM THE ORKNEY ISLANDS TO THE SHETLAND ISLANDS: 25 July 1840 EL ex "Bank of Scotland,
Kirkwall" to a banker in Lerwick endorsed "P Steamer", franked by attractive 4-margin 1d black (light filing fold) tied by fine orange-red Kirkwall MX, with matching mainly fine boxed "KIRKWALL" ds on top flap (part frame lost with seal). Believed to
be the only recorded 1d black cover sent between the Orkneys & the Shetlands, and is a rare 1d black 'steamer' letter. Only a handful of 1d black covers have been recorded from the Orkneys. [Ex Cavendish Auctions 20/6/2012, lot 937; realised
