(slightly ragged edge along top folded under; creasing clear of stamps & marks) from "DHURUMSULA" (red cds on reverse) via "LAHORE" (red transit ds on reverse) to ? (unclear cds on reverse) most extraordinarily franked (for the 1a double rate) with two marginal inscription 1854 ½a blues (Die I, stone A; pos. 6 & 93!) - one from the top and one from the bottom of the sheet - both with 4 good to wide margins (slightly overlapped) and tied by mainly fine dotted diamond cancels. The stamp with the sheet's top margin has the words "...of the requ[ired]...", and the stamp from the bottom of the sheet has the words "[Superin]tendance of.../[Gen]eral's Office C..." at the foot. 5   imageINDIAN MUTINY - ½a-FRANKED LETTERS EX SEALKOTE BARELY A FORTNIGHT BEFORE THE MUTINY THERE; Fine group of 22-29 June 1857 ELs from a British Officer (J.F. Watson) at "SEALKOTE" (each with red 2-ring cds on reverse) to his mother in Simla, each franked by 1854 ½a blue (2 with 4m) all tied by mainly fine "244" Sealkote diamonds. The Mutiny 'massacre' at Sealkote took place on 9 July 1857; these letters are increasingly stressful but sometimes optimistic accounts of the writer's fears of an imminent Sepoy uprising, while relaying news from Delhi and other mutinous cities; "How plainly can we now see that we are hated and feared by the Natives, or at least the Native Army... I look on a Sepoy now with nothing but feelings of disgust... it was reported yesterday that the Gwalior Rajah had turned against us... the loss on the enemy side [at Delhi on the 24th] was enormous...". He also relays news that "the Chumba Rajah... showed great delight in hearing of the Delhi Massacre and fired a salute the day we heard of it...". All the letters deserve full transcription. It seems likely that the writer was relocated with his Regiment soon after 29 June, which then led to the fall of Sealkote. Fascinating insight into the gradual breakdown of law and order in the midst of the Mutiny. (5 covers) Cross Reference: MILITARY (Image)

6   imageINDIAN MUTINY- PAIR OF ½a COVERS EX DELHI [OR ?DELHI] - ONE WITH VERY RARE DELHI FIELD FORCE 2-RING "MISSENT FROM" MARK; 25 Sept. 1857 EL & 2 Dec. [1857] E (both from same writer as previous lot to his mother) from "Camp Delhi" and from ?Delhi (poor cds on back & only part contents) each franked by 1854 ½a blue (cut very close; shaving outer frame lines in places) tied by unclear (emergency?) cancels. The first (from Delhi Camp) was written only 4 days after the city had been recaptured after the rebels were besieged there; it has an oily unclear (as usual for this) strike of the very rare Delhi Field Force usage of the 2-ring "MISSENT FROM" mark (the only mark available during the siege and its immediate aftermath) on the flap beside the red Simla arrival cds. The other has an even oilier strike of what may be the rare red encircled "DELHI/PAID" mark (GH11; recorded only for 1857). The first letter notes that the writer had just ridden up to the Camp and had a hearty breakfast before trying to establish which Regiment he was to be attached to; he notes that his companion "Young Brind has gone to his Uncle [the famous Anglo-Indian Field Force's Artillery Commander, Major James Brind, in Delhi] who is in the City...", and "I purpose going to the Post Office in search f letters as soon as it is a little cooler...", etc. The other letter has only part contents: "...orders will be very soon issued ordering all the Officers of the late N[ative]. I[nfantry]. Regts. to the various Regts. which are still en existence and to the [Si]kh Corps and levies, also to the Goorkah Regts. I may not... have to leave this [place] after all...". Rare pair.
