6 MAY 1840 USAGE - FIRST DAY 1d MULREADY LETTER-SHEET WITH FIRST DAY USAGE OF THE MALTESE CROSS + SENDER'S NOTE "THANK ROWLAND HILL
FOR THIS LETTER"; Remarkable 6 May 1840 usage of the 1d Black Mulready letter-sheet (stereo "A11"; minor creasing, small ink mark at lower right of address, and with wear outside the frame at foot) within the city of Exeter; with very fine orange-red
Maltese Cross on Britannia matching a very fine "EXETER/MY 6/1840/A" cds also - rare thus - on the front. First Day Mulreadys with the datestamp on the front are very seldom seen. Together with the separate small sheet of paper (presumably the only
enclosure) with the message - in the same handwriting as the address - "Thank Rowland Hill for this letter". An excellent example of the First Day Usage of both Mulready and Maltese Cross. [Ex Robson Lowe auction of 19 Jan. 1966, realised £47-10s-0d;
ex RL 'Noel Heritage' auction, 19 July 1985, lot 12, realised £2,052; ex R Siegel NY auction, 16 Apr. 2013, lot 3290, realised $6,250+BP.] Cross Reference: FIRST DAY COVERS, POSTAL REFORMS (Image)
