"We have been isolated for 3 days - too rough for boats to land & we have had no coal for fires for a week...". Plus fine Jan. 1917 PPC from "Inchcolm, via Leith Fort" to Falmouth with KGV ½d tied by Edinr. machine cancel but also having a fine rare purple boxed Inchcolm "CENSORED" mark (initialled) alongside; contents inc. 1568   imageCLYNNOG (WALES) - VERY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "CLYNNOG" FLEURON UDC ON COVER; 26 Oct. 1841 EL "prepaid" from "Clynnog" to Bangor (cds on the flap) with a mainly very fine "CLYNNOG" Fleuron UDC (Willcocks/Jay W790; only one recorded - for 1830) nicely placed on the top flap. Only two examples have been recorded; in 1842 a regular UDC with arcs was issued to Clynnog but no examples have yet been seen on cover. This is the only known fleuron mark used in any Welsh P.O. 1569   imageCORSHAM (WILTS.) - VERY FINE 1st-TYPE "CORSHAM" FLEURON UDC ON LOCAL 1d-RATE COVER TO CHIPPENHAM; 30 Aug. 1824 EL from "Peckeredge" [Farm] to Chippenham charged the "1[d]" local rate with a very fine "CORSHAM" Fleuron UDC (Willcocks/Jay WL190; but significantly different to later types with larger 'carrots' and taller lettering - see following two lots) nicely placed on the top flap. It seems that this is the first time that it has been noted that Corsham had two different Fleuron markings! Exhibition Quality. 1570   imageCORSHAM (WILTS.) - 2nd-TYPE "CORSHAM" FLEURON UDCs ON LOCAL 1d-RATE + FREE COVERS; 5 May 1836 E (turned & posted free twice) from Corsham to London with a fine red London crowned "FREE" cds on the front and a mainly fine "CORSHAM" 2nd-Type Fleuron UDC (Willcocks/Jay WL190; with smaller 'carrots' and lettering - compare with previous lot) nicely placed on the top flap. Plus fine 22 Aug. 1841 cash-paid EL to Chippenham with v. fine 2nd-Type "CORSHAM" fleuron UDC on the top flap and a very fine red (rare thus) "Chippenham/Penny Post" on the front with m/s "1[d]". Good pair; it seems that this is the first time that it has been noted that Corsham had two different Fleuron markings! 1571   imageCORSHAM (WILTS.) - 2nd-TYPE "CORSHAM" FLEURON UDC ON MULREADY 1d ENVELOPE TO CHIPPENHAM; 7 June 1840 usage of the 1d Mulready envelope (diagonal crease across address only; stereo no. obscured) from Corsham to Chippenham cancelled by a very fine orange-red MX with v. fine 2nd-Type "CORSHAM" fleuron UDC (slightly cross join) and "CHIPPENHAM" cds on the top flap. Intriguingly the sender folded the envelope down so that the value tablet below the address was folded round to the back. 1572   imageCOVENTRY (WARWICKS.) - THE RARE "COVENTRY/91" FLEURON MILEAGE C.D.S.s ON 1808-1810 COVERS; 30 May 1808, 14 Aug. 1808 & 30 July 1810 E/ELs to St. Neots/Rochdale/Daventry all with mainly fine to very fine large rare "COVENTRY/91" fleuron cds's (WA103; recorded only 1808-10 according to most sources) on the reverse (one slightly across join & one overlapped by red London cds); the 1808 pair have clear crisp lettering but the 1810 example shows considerable wear and the year date is omitted. 1574   imageDAVENHAM (CHESHIRE) - PAIR OF FINE RARE "DAVENHAM" FLEURON UDCs ON 1826 COVERS; 7 Mar. 1826 E to London with a very fine strike of the very elusive "DAVENHAM" fleuron UDC (Willcocks/Jay CH240; issued to Knutsford in late Dec. 1825; just crossed by light file fold) on the top flap. Possibly the earliest example recorded. Plus 24 Dec. 1826 EL (some toning & flap cut & glued to display whole of fleuron which is struck over the join) to Warrington with a mainly very fine "DAVENHAM" fleuron UDC, but also unusually endorsed "Please to deliver this tonight & you will be paid for yr. trouble by Mr. Ashton [the addressee]". [This mark when applied in red was not struck in Jamaica at this late date, but 1840s examples are clearly in the red Falmouth ink used by that P.O. for its other Ship Letter marks, etc.] Exhibition Item. 1580   imageFALMOUTH (CORNWALL) RARE GREEN "MEXICO" FLEURON ON COVER WITH LONDON DOTTED-FRAME "Oz. at 12s/- per Oz" MARK; 6 June 1829 EL (slight wrinkling; horiz filing crease well clear of all marks) from "Mexico [City]" to Huth in London with a red "FRANCO HAS/TA EL PUERTO" (paid to the port) on the front, but also having a very fine bright green Falmouth "MEXICO" Fleuron nicely placed on on the top flap (CO418; much clearer than usual); charged "1 Oz 12/-" with a very fine rare London Foreign Branch P.O. dotted-frame "Oz. at 12s/- per Oz" mark alongside (4 times the 3/- rate). Very few examples of this Fleuron mark have survived in anything like legible form. Exhibition Quality.
