101   imageNAPLES - 1d NAVAL CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH STITCH-MARKS FOR AN ATTACHED 1d COIN; Unusual 3 May 1840 EL (transcript; dusting, peripheral faults, etc.) headed & countersigned for the 1d Concession Rate for "William Taylor on board H.M.S. Benbow, Naples" and addressed to London; taken in closed Naval Bag to London where it was marked with a black (in error for red) manuscript "1" marking but with red London "PAID" cds (1 June) on the front. Interesting contents incl. "this afternoon returned from Malta, as I was one of the Crew that boar[d]ed a Prize... off Cicila [Sicily]… I wondered that you did not write to me as the expense is only one Penny [the Concession Rate]… we expected to go to China to fight there, but there is no such chance...". There are clear sewing holes visible at the bottom left of the address panel where a 1d coin has been sewn on by the sender to ensure that it qualified for the prepaid 1d Concession Rate (instead of the 1s-7d rate). [Ex Gavin Fryer, 2024; illustrated in his Printed Papers book, p.533.] Very few covers showing holes where a 1d coin was attached have been recorded.Cross Reference: ITALIAN STATES, MILITARY - PENNY CONCESSION RATES, NAVAL MAIL (Image)

ANTIGUA FLEURONS, 1809-1840
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
113   imageEARLY USAGE OF THE LARGE FULL-YEAR-DATE "ANTIGUA" FLEURON ON COVER TO G.B.; Very fine 27 Dec. 1809 EL from "Antigua" to Wells (Somerset) with a mainly very fine large "ANTIGUA/DEC27/1809" fleuron d.s. (the rare full-year 1808-10 1st-Period usage) nicely placed on the front, charged "1/10" (1s-1d Packet rate + 9d inland rate from Falmouth). The interesting contents, written by Judge Rowland Burton (the island's Chief Justice from 1786 until his death in 1814) include; "The times respecting the sugar Colonies in general have been truly disastrous... the distress resulting from the Embargo & non intercourse measures adopted by the Americans... severe droughts here... I am much obliged to you for your condolence of the Calamity that attended me in July by a dreadful fire which consumed many of my negro houses & two of my poor people... I am truly sorry for the subdued state of Europe under the diabolical Usurper & Tyrant...". Most attractive Page One item for any Antigua collection. 114   imageEARLY USAGE OF THE LARGE FULL-YEAR-DATE "ANTIGUA" FLEURON ON COVER TO G.B.; Very fine 2 Dec. 1809 EL from "Antigua" to Cirencester (Glos.) "By the Packet" with a mainly very fine large "ANTIGUA/DEC2/1809" fleuron d.s. (the rare full-year 1808-10 1st-Period usage) nicely placed on the front (very slightly off the edge at top), charged "5/9" (treble 1s-1d Packet rate + 10d inland rate from Falmouth). The interesting contents note two enclosed Bank Bills (for £300 + £ 275 = £600 + £550 in "Currency") - hence the treble rate - and refer to problems collecting money (£3,369-3s-7d) "on account of the Wreck" (probably the Julia, Capt. Snow from Cadiz that was wrecked on Barbuda - see Lloyd's List 9 Feb. 1810, p.1), and the writer now fortunately being in Antigua rather than in "Barbuda". Exhibition Quality. (the no-year 1810-24 usage) nicely placed on the front, most exceptionally endorsed "Post Paid 2/2" (the 1s-3d Packet rate + 11d Falmouth to London); the prepaid endorsement has been boldly crossed out and replaced by a "2/2" charge for no obvious reason) and there is a fine red London "S"-code for Sunday cds on the top flap. Plus fine 12 July 1815 E to London "P. Packet" also with a very fine large "ANTIGUA/JUL12/..." fleuron d.s. (the no-year 1810-24 usage) nicely placed on the front, and also charged "2/2" but with a partly fine red 'hollow' star London Inspector's Mark on the front. "½" Scottish Mail Tax mark). Two have the dates' "1" digits inverted (1834 + 1838) and one has the "8" in the year inverted (1828). The 1838 EL from [Dr.] "Nicholas Nugent" includes; "My case seems the harder, as to not getting my Slave Compensation monies, as it was chiefly by my instrumentality (under God) that Antigua did away with the apprenticeship as well as Slavery itself, and all the West India Colonies have since, from our example, thought it safe to do the same."
