1964   imageTHE EARLIEST RECORDED REGISTERED MAIL FROM LUNDY ISLAND - QV REGD ENV. VIA INSTOW; The attractive and highly important commercial 1 Dec. 1897 usage of the small QV 2d Blue Registered envelope (slight edge wear at foot) to a "Grocer &c., Bideford" cancelled by a very fine "P"-code "LUNDY ISLAND" thimble cds, uprated with a 1d Lilac tied by a superb "INSTOW" squared circle applied in transit. There are also backstamps of Barnstaple & Bideford. There appears to be only one earlier recorded cover with the Lundy cds; a 27 Apr. 1895 env. with 1d Lilac to Falmouth. This is the earliest recorded registered item from Lundy by 6 years. [The next earliest is a July 1903 usage of the KEVII regd. env. to this same Bideford address.] Wonderful Exhibition Item. 1975   imageWHITCHURCH - 1d MULREADY LETTER-SHEET WITH MX (APPARENTLY STRUCK IN NEWCASTLE!) CLEAR OF BRITANNIA & APPARENTLY STRUCK IN NEWCASTLE!; Extraordinary 30th Dec. 1841 commercial usage of the Mulready 1d Black letter-sheet (stereo A65; central vertical fold clear of marks; cancelling an order for some "Roll Ridges") from "Lime Kiln Wharf" near "WHITCHURCH-SALOP" (v. fine cds on front) to "Tunstall" with v. fine "NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LINE" cds just across the join. There is a most unusual partially 'hollow' black Maltese Cross well clear of Britannia (and so contrary to regulations), but strangely it appears to have been struck in Newcastle under Line (it matches the cds on the reverse). Presumably it was accidentally left uncancelled in Whitchurch and cancelled (incorrectly) on arrival at Tunstall head office in Newcastle. Unique 'Comedy of Errors'?!
