1983   imageETCHINGHAM REVOLUTION - EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF CHAOS CAUSED BY MACHINE WRECKER RIOTS; Fine and fascinating 8 Nov. 1830 EL (typed transcript) sent free from "Darvel Bank" near "ROBERTSBRIDGE" (mainly fine UDC on the front) to an M.P. in London (fine red crowned "FREE" cds on the front) with a graphic account of the ongoing troubles in Sussex; "On our arrival at Robertsbridge, we were met... by an immense number of men, women & boys in full cry after a Mr. Johnson, steward to Mr. Alfree... They had been to drag him out of his house, from which he escaped, ran a back way over the fields & was traced by some[one]. They were dragging an empty cart hunting for their victim, whom at length they found concealed in the lane, & pounced on him with a hideous yell & put him in the cart. I believe he fainted. Mr. M. & I & one or two who on horseback, & one or two respectable tradesmen on foot, tried all in our power to save him. They decided they wd. not hurt him, but wd. drag him out of the parish & turn him loose. They proceeded to the midst of the town, about ¼ of a mile... we got him out of the cart... into the inn & upstairs. We were now surrounded by perhaps 500 men:- the inn full of farmers, & the whole waiting for the result of the Battel meeting. They had drawn up a paper with their demands; I know not what the amount (is that) they have fixed for wages, but 'It must be - it shall be - settled now!' was the cry. They made a ring in which we were inclosed & no modifications wd. be listened (to); nor any promise taken but actual signing. So all the landlords and occupiers then pre-sent put their hands to the paper, to save their lives I may almost say... the farmers have made Micklethwaite sign a paper promising a reduction of I know not what - 'None of your paltry 10%' was the cry; I believe it amounts to 25%. They are now dispersing...". Amazing and historic letter. Cross Reference: FREE MAIL (Image)

ACCOUNT OF CHAOS CAUSED BY MACHINE WRECKER RIOTS IN SKIPTON, ETC.; Fascinating 3 Jan. 1831 EL from “Leeds” (v. fine single-arc cds next to wax seal) sent to Saddleworth (from wife to husband) charged "7[d]" postage. It gives news of mayhem and arson; “I have been very much alarmed by hearing of Mills being set on fire - and as it seems mischievous and bad people were spread all over the country, it behoves every man to look to himself…There was man arrived on a panting horse to urge the Insurance Offices to send the Engines with all possible haste to Mr. Dewhurst’s Mill in Skipton, but it was too late; when they got there not one stone was standing upon another…They are burning stacks and Barns about Otley.” There was much civil unrest throughout the country - from agricultural Sussex to the factories of Yorkshire and Lancashire - in the early 1830s, due to labourers being replaced by machines.
