1882   imageARMADA YEAR - 1588 "BARTO. CORSINI" SIGNED EL FROM LONDON TO VENICE SENT BY THE SEA ROUTE(?); 7+14 Dec. 1588 EL (some minor ink-etching and weak folds, but not affecting address panel or signature) sent from "Londra" clearly addressed to "Stefano de Patti In Venezia" and clearly signed "Barto Corsini In Londra" (folds to show signature beside the address panel) without a postal rate, but thought to be the earliest recorded letter (of less than a dozen) signed by Corsini himself in private hands. It still has the complete red wax seal on the reverse showing Corsini's distinctive "c+" Merchant's Guild Mark design. The filing note shows that it took 57 days to reach Venice, consistent with a sea voyage. The contents (largely written in Corsini's own hand in Italian; large part transcription included) concern commodity trade disputes and ongoing arbitration; it was written only a couple of months after the remnants of the Spanish Armada had returned to Spain. The disputes may have been caused by the chaos caused by the Armada itself; translation of the full contents would surely reveal a lot more. Exhibition Item of great significance.Cross Reference: EARLY LETTERS, ITALIAN STATES, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

1886   imageVERY RARE PRE-1680 INTERNAL IRISH POSTAL RATE - "4[d]" FROM DUBLIN TO KINSALE; 19 Feb. 1662 EL (reinforced central vertical crease well clear of postal rate) from "Ja[mes]. Ware" (1594-1666; Auditor General of Ireland) charged “4[d]” internal single-sheet 'above 40 miles' postal rate (presumably for 170 miles from Dublin) to “Robert Southwell, Kinsale”. Mail volumes within Ireland were extremely small until 1700, and the majority of Irish letters of that period were sent at the ‘all-in’ 6d per sheet rate between Dublin and London. It is not clear how many Post Offices Ireland had before 1700. The letter confirms the allocation of 361 acres at “Rincoran” (Ringuorran, near Kinsale) and another 447 acres nearby – all “formerly [being] the propriety of [Philip] Barryoge, Irish Papist” – for 21 years from 1658 in satisfaction for a debt incurred supplying the King's fleet at a time apparently unspecified. By August 1665 Southwell was Deputy Vice-Admiral of Munster, and on 20 September 1670 he was appointed Vice-Admiral of the province and admitted as a member of the provincial council. Rare thus. 1887   image1711 - RARE TWO "X" CROSS POST HS's: 7 July 1711 EL ex Oxford to Much Wenlock rated "4[d]" endorsed in "By ye Cross Post/ Bridgnorth Bagg", with both (faint) "OXON X" of Oxford, and "SHREWSBURY X" hs's on back. Any letter with a handstruck cross-post "X" is a great rarity, TWO "X" marks is probably unique. The Shrewsbury X is both lightly struck and albino, but can be seen (clearly under IR). RPSL cert. (2022). A great addition to an exhibit of early British postal history. Cross Reference: SHROPSHIRE, OXFORDSHIRE (Image)

1890   imageVERY EARLY "PD" IN CIRCLE COVER TO DUBLIN: 18 May 1713 small EL from Edinburgh to Dublin via London endorsed "pd 6d" (the charge from Edinburgh to London) and "fford 6" (indicating the charge for forwarding from London to Dublin), having a very fine small uninked (almost albino) Edinburgh oval "MY/28" Bishop mark, London black circular "IV/3" Bishop mark and "PD" in circle (Jay L90; recorded only 1713-65, but the Traudl collection included a 1712 example) on the front. A very early date for London's first prepaid mark and a fine cover. Jay states "The first General Post Paid handstamp is on a letter dated 18 May 1713, from Scotland to Dublin via London". Willcocks states "London had its first PD handstamp in 1713... before 1740 it is so rarely used inland that it has been stated (incorrectly) that before 1740, it was only used on foreign letters". A fine and rare example. Cross Reference: DUBLIN CITY, EDINBURGH (Image)
