2121   imageISLE OF MULL - AROS - SPECTACULAR MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION ON 1d REDS (4) COVER; Extraordinary 11 Feb. 1870 long env. (minor creasing) to "Laggan, Ulva" (a hamlet 10 miles from Aros) franked for the 1oz-2oz 4d rate by a strip of three pl.181 1d Reds + a single pl.196 1d Red, all most unusually cancelled (and tied) by three long crossed manuscript lines, although there is a fine "AROS" cds on the reverse. It seems that Laggan was in the delivery area of the Aros P.O. and that the Aros "23" numeral was not available (lost/mislaid?) and so it was within P.O. regulations for local mail to be cancelled in manuscript. However, very few examples of manuscript-cancelled Line Engraved covers have been recorded, and this is doubly significant having been sent within a Hebridean island. [Ex G.B. Horton, 2021.] Cross Reference: 1864-79 1d PLATES (Image)

Plus 8 July 1904 PPC to Edinburgh with KEVII ½d tied by v. fine transit 2-ring "OBAN" cds but also having a truly superb purple "KERRERA/OBAN" island purple cds alongside. Very rare and spectacular pair. (cover + card) Cross Reference: RETURNED MAIL (Image)
