TINY ISLAND OF GIGHA - EARLIEST KNOWN LETTER FROM THE ISLAND - WITH CIRCULAR "TAR/BERT"; 23 Feb. 1802 EL (folds neatly to show
internal dated heading alongside the address panel) ex "Gigha" to "Lunga, Craignish, Inverary" sent 57 years before there was a Post Office on Gigha and so carried privately to Tarbert and posted there with a fair "TAR/BERT" in circle across the
seal/join. It is thought that the next earliest cover recorded from Gigha was dated 1824, (sold in Cavendish's Mar. 2022 auction, lot 842 for £240+BP). This is the earliest known cover by 22 years. [Ex G.B. Horton, 2021.] (Image)

to this letter was due to the writer being on the "steam boat [that] sailed early in the morning...". Only one other pre-1840 cover (of 1802) from this tiny island off the coast of Islay has been recorded; its Post Office was not opened until 1859.

ISLAND OF GIGHA - RARE "REGISTERED AT GIGHA" 1d REDS COVER: 14 Nov. 1866 env. (small closed tear at foot of address) "Registered" to
Paisley franked by a Vertical Strip of Four + single 1d Red 'Stars' tied by fair to fine Lochgilphead "232" Numerals but also endorsed "at Gigha" beside "Registered" on the front by this tiny island's P.O. during a period when it had no handstruck
mark at all (its first mark was issued in 1859 but then withdrawn in 1860, so no example has ever been found. The next mark was not issued until 1888 and we have not recorded any mark of Gigha prior to 1900). Only Registered mail was marked as coming
from the island, in the 1860-88 period and only 4 other covers have been reported so far. Exhibition Item. [Ex Bruce Auckland.; sold by Cavendish for £380 + BP Sep. 2012, lot 854] (Image) (Image2)

ISLE OF MULL - BUNESSAN BLUE UDC STRUCK BENEATH 1d RED (APPLIED IN TRANSIT) OR AS BACKSTAMP; 12/21 Nov. 1850 E/env. from
"Knocknefenaig" or "Kilfinichen" each with 1d Red tied by a faint Aros Numeral; the first with a fine blue "BUNESSAN" UDC struck beneath the stamp (NB; 4m) - showing that Bunessan did not have a stock of stamps but had an account with its Head Office
at Aros where the stamp was put on and cancelled. The other cover has a very fine blue "BUNESSAN" UDC on the side-flap (crease) but there is no UDC beneath the stamp (EB; 3m) which was presumably put on by the sender. Wonderful matched pair proving
that stamp were not always available in village P.O.s. [Both ex G.B. Horton, 2021.] (2 covers) Cross Reference: 1841 1d REDS

JURA - RARE "JURA/S.O." CDS ON 1/- EMBOSSED COVER PREPAID IN CASH (TO RURAL POSTMAN) EN ROUTE; 12 May 1855 env. (minor dusting & top
flap lost) to "North Carolina...Via Liverpool" with a mainly very fine rare distinctive "JURA/[S].O." cds on the front, franked by a very near 4m cut-square Embossed 1/- Green tied by a fine Lochgilphead "23" numeral and the fair red NY transit cds.
The stamp was placed over a red manuscript "Paid 1/-" endorsement, which shows that the letter was handed to a rural postman rather than being posted at the Jura P.O. and so (as per P.O. regulations) it was prepaid in cash and the postman applied the
stamp at Jura P.O. The stamp was subsequently cancelled in transit at the Head Office at Lochgilphead (part May 12 ds on reverse). The P.O. Instruction No.37 of Nov. 1851 specifically allowed this practice of rural postman cash-payment, but very few
example have been recorded from anywhere in Britain. This example from the Isle of Jura is surely unique. Cross Reference: EMBOSSED ISSUES, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS (Image)
