2041   imageMISSENT TO RUSSIA - QV 6d MAUVE ON COVER TO "RABAT, MOROCCO" BUT SENT TO MOSCOW!; Extraordinary 13 Aug. 1867 env. (minor creasing) from Jersey in the Channel Islands to a traveller care of the “[British] Vice Consul, Rabat, Morocco… Via Gibraltar” correctly prepaid with a G.B. 6d Mauve (pl.6) tied by a very fine “JERSEY/409” Duplex with red London “PD” & 15 Aug. backstamp. Inexplicably, it was sent from London to Aachen instead of to Gibraltar (via Falmouth or Southampton) and so was Missent to Moscow (someone must have misread “Morocco” as “Moscow” although it is very clearly written). There is a blue 2-ring “AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN/FRANCO” cds (16 Aug.) on the front and several Moscow Julian calendar backstamps (20 Aug. and 14/15 Sept. in the British/Gregorian calendar) as well as a final Prussian “EYDTKUHNEN/BROMBERG” railway T.P.O. ds (17 Sept.). The blue crayon “M[?]7” was a Russian postage due charge; at this time the ¼oz rate to Tangier was 6d, but the rate to Russia was 1s-2d. There are Russian and German manuscript endorsements on the front (“Not to be found” in German and “Morocco”; plus “Mapok” and “Try[?] Vice Consul, Arbat” both in Russian). [Arbat is a district of Moscow]. The final part of the journey must have been from the Prussian T.P.O. to Gibraltar via France and Spain. A mystery yet to be solved entirely, but very probably a unique 19th century Missent multi-national cover. Exhibition Quality. 2050   imagePETER WILLIAMSON EDINBURGH 1d-POST - THE RARE SERPENTINE "NOT PAID" MARK; 27 Apr. 1792 E sent locally within Edinburgh by Peter Williamson’s ‘private’ Penny Post. It has the very scarce ‘Peter Williamson’ serpentine “NOT PAID” mark that was introduced when the circular Williamson “…NOT PAID” mark had finally worn out early in Jan. 1790; it was only in use for the last two years of Williamson’s independent post – from 28 May 1790 to 14 June 1793 – so very few examples have been recorded. Williamson ran an Edinburgh Coffee House from the 1760s; late in 1773, he had introduced, entirely off his own bat, a local post within Edinburgh. The Post Office tolerated it, and it was a great success - until the P.O. took him over in July 1793. (Image)

2053   imageTHE RARE "V[Crown]R" INSPECTOR'S MARK OF GLASGOW - PRE-1840 IN RED + 1842 IN BLACK; 15 Nov. 1839 E from Liverpool (fine orange cds on top flap) to Glasgow charged "11[d]" with a fair boxed Liverpool "½" alongside, but having the "11" changed to "1/10" (double rate) in Glasgow with a fine rare red Glasgow "V[Crown]R" mark struck over the "11". Plus the rare matching 24 Nov. 1842 E prepaid "1[d]" in cash from Glasgow to Edinburgh but also having a mainly very fine rare black Glasgow "V[Crown]R" mark struck on the front but with no change of postal rate. It is thought that the rare 1840s usages of this mark may indicate letters that had had their weights checked and found to be no more than ½ an ounce. Only about a dozen 1838-39 red usages have been recorded and a handful of the 1840-42 black usages. Wonderful Pair.
