GUERNSEY POSTAL HISTORY
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
2025   imageSCARCE SMALL "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LRE" EX GUERNSEY + RARE PRE-1840 VALLE LOCAL COVER; 26 Jan. 1791 letter was sent from Guernsey [gleaned from the contents] to “St. Austell” by private ship (before the opening of the P.O. on the island) and so has the small “PORTSMOUTH SHIP-LRE” mark (Rob. S6; EKD? - known 1791-1829) on the front with a manuscript “7[d]” charge (1d for the Captain + 6d ‘above 150 miles’ inland rate). The addressee(?) has used the blank reverse for pencil drawings of rather unattractive female & male heads! Plus rare local 28 July 1838 EL from St. Peter Port to "Maison de Bas, Vingtaine de l'Epine, Valle" without a postal rate but having a very fine "GUERNSEY" cds on the front. We cannot recall having seen a local pre-1840 Guernsey cover like this before... Plus c.1820 coloured print of St. Peter Port. (3 items)Cross Reference: SHIP LETTERS, HAMPSHIRE (Image)

2026   imageVERY EARLY CONCAVE "GUERNSEY" ON RARE EARLY FREE COVER FROM THE ISLAND TO (N. SCOTLAND); 10 June 1794 E from “Lt. Col. Alex[ande]r Mackenzie” commander of the Guernsey Garrison’s “78th Regiment” to his name-sake “Lt. Col. F.H. Mackenzie”, the head of the clan (who had raised the 78th himself) in Dingwall endorsed “M.P.” with very early 1st-type Guernsey mark, the concave “GUERNSEY” (introduced in late February of that year). It was allowed as a “FREE” letter in transit through London, because the addressee was the M.P. for Ross-shire. Early free mail from the Channel Isles is rare; the postal rate (per sheet) for this letter would have been 2d+5d+7d+6d=1s-8d! [2d Packet + 5d Weymouth to London + 7d to Edinr. + 6d to Dingwall.] [Ex Grosvenor auction, 20 Nov. 2014; £553 inc. BP.] Exhibition Quality.Cross Reference: FREE MAIL, SCOTLAND (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

2027   imageEARLY ABUSE OF SOLDIER'S 1d CONCESSION RATE COVER PREPAID TO THE ISLE OF MULL; Very fine 4 Aug. 1797 EL from “Guernsey” to the Isle of Mull (at “Lochbuy, A[u]chnacraig”) correctly accepted at the prepaid 1d Soldier’s Concession Rate because it was addressed to a “[private] soldier [of the] L. F. Regt.”; it has the 1st-Type concave “GUERNSEY” beside a red manuscript “P1” (prepaid 1d) with the London transit “PAID” mark and a faint red Edinburgh transit Bishop Mark (on the reverse). Unusually it was also countersigned at the top by an officer of the Guernsey Garrison. Concession Rate covers prior to 1800 are rare, and especially from the Channel Isles. The contents clearly show this was an abuse of the Soldier’s Privilege rate; the letter was from an officer’s wife in Guernsey to a “Col. Maclaine of Lochbuy”, with the private soldier acting as a kind of poste restante agent, to enable the sender and addressee to avoid the normal (high) postage rate per sheet of 2d+7d+8d+7d=2/-, 24 times the actual 1d paid!! [Ex Brian Brookes, Mar. 2018; £395 inc. BP.] Exhibition Quality. 2028   imageCORRECT USE OF SOLDIER'S 1d CONCESSION RATE WITH CONTENTS ABOUT THE RULES FOR IT; Remarkable 18 May 1819 EL (interesting family contents) from a Private Soldier of the 33rd Regiment with a mainly fine “GUERNSEY” scroll nicely placed on the front with red manuscript "1[d]" and a fine red London transit "PAID" tombstone ds. It was presumably written from Guernsey Barracks and it has been headed and countersigned for the prepaid 1d Soldier’s Concession Rate. He says; “When you write, do not omit Private on the directions, as the omission of the Rank subjects the letter to [a] full charge of postage”. The rules for this special concession were strict, because - for example - in this case the normal rate would be 3d to Weymouth plus 9d on to Leicester; 1/- in all! No ordinary soldier could have afforded to send letters at full postage rates. [Purchased by the vendor from Bill Bird in 1983.] Plus small c.1840 coloured map of Guernsey & Sark. Exhibition quality. 2029   imagePAIR OF RARE "GUERNSEY" SCROLL COVERS TO OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS (BERMUDA & AUSTRIA) AT HIGH RATES; 24 Dec. 1823 EL from “Guernsey” to “H.M. Ship Salisbury, Bermuda via Falmouth” prepaid 2s-3d by the sender (the addressee’s father) with a 2nd-Type “GUERNSEY” scroll-framed namestamp on the flap; the rate was 3d Packet to Weymouth + 9d inland to Falmouth + 1s-3d Packet rate to Bermuda. It went to Halifax (Nova Scotia; 7 Feb.) on the ‘Lady Wellington’ NY Packet and then trans-shipped to a vessel to Bermuda. The letter (very cross-written to save postage) carries Christmas greetings and news of a promotion. [With copy of illustrated record of this cover in the Brit. Caribbean Phil. Soc. mag. of July 1984.] Plus 21 July 1828 EL from “Guernsey” to “Trieste, Autriche” prepaid 2s-10s and is also partly cross-written; it has a 2nd-Type “GUERNSEY” scroll-framed namestamp & a London Foreign Branch cds; the rate was 3d Packet rate to Weymouth + 8d inland to London + 1s-11d to Austria via France. This was a very high rate for a single letter at this date. The letter asks the addressee to arrange the sale of his coach & horses in Trieste because he had now decided not to return there! Only a handful of pre-1840 letters from the Channel Isles to either Bermuda or Austria have been recorded. Exhibition Items. 2030   imageEMBOSSED 1/- GREEN COVER - UNIQUE(?) SPECIAL EMBOSSED FRAME FOR THE OCTAGONAL STAMP - TO C.G.H.; 13 June 1851 envelope sent from “GUERNSEY” (blue cds on the flap) to “Cape Town” by the General Screw S.S. Company’s ship “Hellespont” at the single Packet rate of 1s-0d, so it has a neatly ‘cut-to-shape’ Embossed 1s-0d Green cancelled by a partly fine “324” Guernsey Numeral, being charged “4[d]” ingoing C.G.H. Ship Letter rate on delivery. Of equal interest is the specially embossed octagonal frame beneath the stamp (just showing around the right-hand edges of the stamp; with enlarged scan of the inside of the envelope showing the octagon pencilled over). This envelope was clearly made specially for letters requiring the 10d or 1s-0d Embossed stamps and the embossing was applied before the envelopes were folded and pre-gummed to be sold. Thomas de la Rue was born in Guernsey, and it may be that these envelopes were made by his firm (one of the largest producers of commercial envelopes in Britain in the 1850s). This appears to be the only recorded example of a special embossed-frame envelope. [Ex John Dickson, 2020.] Cross Reference: EMBOSSED ISSUES, OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (Image)

2031   imageUNDERPAID 1/- RATE COVER TO HONG KONG WITH “EXCG/[½]/OZ./DEFICIENT POSTAGE [1-9]/BRITISH SHARE OF FINE [6]”, ETC.; 8 Aug. 1861 env. (minor edge wear) from Guernsey to the Commanding Officer of the “Royal Engineers, Hong Kong, China” and three 4d Rose-Carmines were tied by the “GUERNSEY/324” duplex. It was correctly prepaid for the “Via Southampton” rate (1/- above ½oz & up to ¾oz), but it was clearly endorsed “Via Marseilles” and so should have been prepaid at the much higher rate of 2s-9d (above ½oz & up to ¾oz). This error was noticed in transit through London and so there is a manuscript “2/3” Postage Due charge on the front, along with the boxed red London “EXCG/[½]/OZ./DEFICIENT POSTAGE [1-9]/BRITISH SHARE OF FINE [6]” mark as well plus the red London hs “2” indicating that 2d was to be credited to the Hong Kong Post Office from the prepaid 1/- postage. There is a 21 Sept. “HONG KONG” arrival backstamp showing that this letter was carried from Marseilles. The total journey time was 44 days. Spectacular Exhibition Item. Only a handful of this Jethou datestamp (this example illustrated in Newport, p.198, fig.13.16). Plus a small coloured c.1840 map of the islands showing (but not naming) Jethou close to Herm. 2033   imageSARK - VERY EARLY PRESTAMP COVER TO GUERNSEY ENDORSED "TO BE DELIVERED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"; 19 June 1828 EL (folds neatly to show internal heading alongside address; closed seal tear affects address panel at top) sent “to be delivered as soon as possible” from “Sark” to “Upper Clifton [St. Peter Port] Guernsey” by retired militia officer Captain P[eter] Grut (1771-1855) to his married daughter. The contents reveal that it was sent along with a “Tin Box containing Collings Carre’s hat papers - History of Man - Paints & Brush” by “Capt. Massey” - in the regular inter-island vessel The Jane. Very few prestamp covers from Sark have been recorded, and this is one of the earliest in private hands. Cross Reference: GUERNSEY POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

2034   imageSARK - RARE UNPAID MAY 1840 "P.pd" COVER CHARGED "2[d]" TO OXFORD WITH "SOUTHAMPTON/SHIP-LETTER"; 14 May 1840 EL from a guest of Sark’s 16th Seigneur at the “Seigneurie Serk” [the island’s principal Manor house], to her brother in Oxford, which was probably carried by the regular bi-weekly S.S. Lady de Saumarez to Southampton. It was endorsed “P[ostage]. [1d] p[ai]d” (perhaps for the local fisherman to take it to Guernsey?) - there were no postage stamps available on Sark at this date - but that was crossed out and the unpaid “2[d]” rate applied with a “SOUTHAMPTON/SHIP LETTER” on the top flap. Just a year before this, the postal rate would have been 1s-4d; 8d Ship Letter rate plus 8d inland to Oxford (50-80 miles)! 2035   imageSARK - RARE INGOING PAIR WITH INDIA FRANKINGS - ONE REF. POST-INDIAN MUTINY CAMPAIGN; Diminutive 20 Feb. 1859 env. sent by Captain Thomas Harvey (addressee of the famous 1858 “SARK” UDC cover with QV 6d to India) in “SASSERAM” (India; fair red 2-ring cds on reverse) to “Parsonage Sark” and delivered by the island’s Post Office that first opened on 19 June 1857. It was prepaid for the 6as “via Marseilles” ¼-ounce rate with six India 1a Browns tied by fair Sasseram “170” Numerals. Plus matching 5-12 Apr. 1859 EL from Captain Thomas Harvey in “Camp” at “SASSERAM” (blurred red 2-ring cds on reverse) also addressed to “Parsonage Sark” which was prepaid for the 4as (½-ounce via Southampton) rate with a single India 4as Black tied by a fair Sasseram “170” Numeral. The writer was serving with the British forces that spent over a year trying to ‘mop up’ the remaining rebels after the end of the Indian Mutiny in 1858. The fascinating contents of this second letter include: “…Col. Turner had gone out after the Rebels… returned today with no tidings of the Rebels; they had pursued them ever so far, but the Rebels were too wise to think of fighting… April 12…Tanta Topi has been caught [on 7 April] & 50 rebels have also been taken by a Magistrate. I have got a small wolf cub, an awful savage beast… in the cage formed by my wicker bottomed chair…”. Rare matched pair by the different routes. (2 covers) Cross Reference: INDIA, MILITARY (Image)
