1440   imagePERFORATED QV ISSUES & PARCEL POST LABELS. VERY RARE BOXED "EXETER" SCOTS-LOCAL-LIKE CANCEL ON 1d RED 'STARS' COVER TO LONDON; 13 Aug. 1855 env. (address crossed by filing notes but well clear of stamp & cancel) to London with a fine blue "SOUTHERNHAY" UDC & a regular "EXETER/F" cds on the reverse, but having a 1d Red 'stars' (off-centre as so often) tied purely by a very fine rare boxed "EXETER". This distinctive Exeter cancel resembles the contemporary Scots Local cancels, but only 7 covers and a few pieces/stamps have been recorded with it, all dated between 13 Aug. and 9 Sep. 1855. The usual Exeter Sideways Duplex continued in regular use throughout this period, so it seems that this mysterious cancellation must have been used for an Experiment of some kind. This is the earliest recorded example and perhaps the finest known on cover. Important Exhibition Item. [There was no example on cover in the Almond or Burden collections, although there was a dated piece in the latter; Cavendish 7 Mar. 2013, lot 1298; realised £170.] Cross Reference: 1854-65 1d REDS, 1840s CANCELLATIONS (Image) (Image2) (All Images)
