First Day Mulreadys with the datestamp on the front are very seldom seen. Together with the separate small sheet of paper (presumably the only enclosure) with the message - in the same handwriting as the address - "Thank Rowland Hill for this letter". An excellent example of the First Day Usage of both Mulready and Maltese Cross. 1379   imageMULREADY STATIONERY, 1840-48. VERY RARE USAGE OF R.W. HUME's MULREADY CARICATURE "No.1" (UNIQUE STATE 5f) WITH 4m 1d BLACK EX LONDON REDIRECTED VIA EXETER; 22(?) May 1840 usage of the Hume Comic Envelope "No.1" Mulready Caricature (closed tears at top and all folds reinforced with hingeing) from London (mainly fine black "Q/MY-2[2?]/1840" cds on side-flap) to Exeter and 4m Plate 2 1d Black (NA; has probably been removed for inspection and then put back slightly out of position) tied by a red Maltese Cross. It was then redirected to Totnes and (a second time) to Yealmpton. At some point the caricature figure of Britannia has been cancelled by another (different?) orange-red Maltese Cross, and 1d was paid in cash for one of the redirections, but there are no other backstamps/transit marks and so it cannot be ascertained where it was posted, or from where it was sent by private means, because there is only one red manuscript (cash-paid 1d) "1" marking on the front. It seems most likely that it was sent by post from Exeter to Totnes (oddly without an Exeter cds), and then sent for the final leg from Totnes to Yealmpton (16 miles) by private means. [This is the only recorded example of the State 5f of this design; illustrated twice in Cassell/Hobbs, p.211.] [Ex Ron Hake.]Cross Reference: MULREADY STATIONERY & PROPAGANDA COVERS, 1840 1d BLACKS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image) (Image2) (All Images)
