1356   imageSHIP & INDIA LETTER MARKINGS, 1775-1834. 'WAR OF 1812' - RARE OVAL "Ship Letter/[CROWN]/EXETER" ON COVER EX BRITISH P.O.W. IN NEWPORT, RI; Oct. 1813 E from "Newport, Rhode Island" to Dumfries in Scotland charged "1/6" with a very fine large framed Carlisle "Addl/½" on the front beside a mostly fine (inverted) rare oval "Ship Letter/[crown]/EXETER" hs - very few examples have been recorded (almost always much poorer than this). There are two "Newport, Rhode Island" filing endorsements and a contemporary pencil note that it was sent from "Mr. John Grierson Surgeon on board the 'Morgiana' Packet when captured by the 'Saratoga' Privateer Sep. 1813 & carried into Rhode Island; care of Mr. Perry, Newport, Rhode Islands - in absence to be opened by Mrs Perry. Eben Barrie sails for Rio Janeiro in the 'Heywood of Greenock, Capt. McLaine; sails 27 Jany. 1814". The letter (typed transcript) is a brief note to his father from James Grierson, the former surgeon on board the Morgania captured by the American privateer Saratoga the month prior and now a Prisoner of War in Newport; "This will assure that I am well & happy. Mr Gilpin, formerly Consol, now Agent for Prisoners, has been very attentive to Capt. Cunningham & myself...". The Morgiana was a British Post Office Packet Ship en route to Surinam, and her capture was much celebrated in the U.S. at the time. A ballad was printed about it, and Historian Edgar Maclay has described the engagement as "one of the most obstinately contested actions between an American privateer and a British government packet". Extremely rare 'War of 1812' Prisoner of War cover. [Ex John Loraine; Cavendish June 2021 auction, lot 1701, realised £1,800+BP.] Cross Reference: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, SHIP LETTERS, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL-OPENING IN BLOCKADE, ETC.); 3 May 1806 EL (typed transcript; minor toning) from "New York" to Manchester endorsed "Pr. [Ship] Otis [by] London" but having a mainly very fine (for this) rare oval-framed "Ship Letter/[crown]/EXETER" (Rob.S2; 1804-13, slight toning at left) on the front; very few examples have been recorded - almost always much poorer strikes than this. Also with red London Inspector's Crown changing "1/2" rate to "2/4" to "2/8". Interesting contents ref. cotton trade and the war; "I have examined the letters which are...suspected to have been opened but cannot perceive that they were...there are two frigates off the harbour which fired and killed a man on board of a coasting sloop a few days ago...". Clearly the British Navy was blockading US ports following Napoleon's 1806 Blockade. Rare thus. [Ex Cavendish Oct. 2022 auction; lot 1403, realised £432 inc. BP.] Cross Reference: SHIP LETTERS, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

The British victory at Salamanca had only taken place a few weeks before (on 22 July), and the writer notes that the Siege of Burgos is still ongoing, etc. Exhibition Quality. 1360   imageSHIP & INDIA LETTER MARKINGS, 1775-1834. RARE BOXED "INDIA LETTER/EXETER" ON N.S.W. COVER POSTED IN MAURITIUS WITH "MAURITIUS/= = =/POST-OFFICE" MARK; Remarkable and attractive 27 Aug. 1828 EL (mentioning two enclosures; a sales account & a Bill of Exchange) from "Sydney, New South Wales" to London "Per Elizabeth" also endorsed "Via Mauritius" and so having a mainly very fine "MAURITIUS/= = =/POST-OFFICE" mark (unrecorded type? - similar to Proud PS3 but longer lines between the words) nicely placed on the front. On the reverse is a very fine rare boxed "INDIA LETTER/EXETER" (one corner across edge but displays well opened out) beside a red 2-ring London arrival cds (25 Mar.). It was charged "3/1" which was the triple 11d inland rate plus the single (under 3oz) India Letter 4d rate. Intriguingly, the letter would have been charged 4s-9d (3 times the 8d Ship Letter rate instead of the 4d IL rate) if it had been sent on a ship directly from Sydney, because Australian mail did not benefit from the lower India Letter rates until 1830. Exhibition Quality and a rare Australia to G.B. via Mauritius routing. Cross Reference: MAURITIUS, INDIA, SHIP LETTERS, NEW SOUTH WALES (Image) (Image2) (All Images)
