TRANSIT SHIP LETTER WITH 2s-9d TO PAY; 20 Dec. 1825 EL (part of one flap lost, not affecting contents, marks or address) from "G.P.O., LONDON" with "O.H.M.S. Francis Freeling" imprints on the address side, sent free to "Rotterdam" (charged "10" Dutch postage on delivery; partly fine "Engeland/Over Brielle" on the flap) and so having a fine red 2-ring London crowned "FREE" ds on the front with mostly printed contents advising that "THERE is a [Ship] Letter... at this Office directed to you which cannot be forwarded until the postage of [2/9] is paid...". PACKET FROM HOLYHEAD"; 12 Mar. 1831 printed Dublin receipt (4½ x 7½ins.; Small fault at top and light gum stains at left & lower right) with coach & four horses at top "For Expenses on [a parcel] per Post-Office Packet from Holyhead" listing 8s/- for "Land Carriage to Holyhead", 1s-0d "Freight to Dublin" & 1s-0d for "Porterage" making a total of 10s-0d to pay. Also listing the various Mailcoach services from around England via Holyhead and the Howth Coach. We have only recorded two other examples of this receipt. Rare item from the Parcels firm that used special labels on parcels from the early 1820s. 1138   imageSHREWSBURY COURT SUMMONS WITH 1d BLACK HAVING "CLERK OF THE PEACE & JUSTICE/SALOP" CACHET INSIDE; 1 Jan. 1841 EL (some dusting and wrinkling) from Shrewsbury to Ironbridge with 1d Black (JB just 4m; tiny scuff at top right) tied by a messy orange-red MX but also having a very fine black "SHREWSBURY/D" cds nicely placed on the top flap. The contents are a mostly printed Summons to attend Court on 5 Jan. 1841 on behalf of the prosecution, and they have a faint strike of a 2-ring armorial "CLERK OF THE PEACE & JUSTICE/SALOP" cachet at top left. 1139   imageUNPAID/FREE NEWSPAPER RATES - COMPLETE PAPERS SENT TO PRUSSIA & TO WESTMORLAND; Fine complete 22 Sept. 1855 4-page "London Gazette Extraordinary" (with news of the final capture of Sebastopol) sent from London to Prussia without prepayment (the new rules of Aug. 1855 allowed this to Prussia) but having a ms "1" delivery charge as well as a very fine red 2-ring "Aus ENGLAND/Per AACHEN" ds (23 Sept.) at the top, and oddly having the 1d Tax Stamp at the foot cancelled by the Prussian "AUSG./24/9" arrival cds. Plus complete 28 Mar. 1857 folded issue of the "Saturday Review" in a specially printed wrapper addressed to the "[Election] Committee"... [Appleby, Westmoreland]" with the 1d Tax Stamp visible at right as per PO regulations. Good pair showing the free transmission of papers within GB; each neatly fits on an album page.
