1751 LETTER WITH FRENCH RECEIVING MARKS: July 1751 EL from Cap to Bordeaux. Partly boxed agent's handstamp "I.DUFORREST/A.BORDEAUX"
in black split across the flap on reverse. Mr I Duforrest acted as an agent for distribution of incoming mail in the Bordeaux area. He traded extensively with Saint Domingue and is credited as the first forwarding agent to use a handstamp. (Image)

1797 TURNED COVER USED THREE TIMES: First use to William Wyer, Newbury Port, Massachusetts by schooner "Hannah" (no postal marks).
EL is datelined Cape Nicolau Mole, 13 Jun. 1797. Detailed content tells of problems arising from fierce fighting during the rebellion at this time. Letter was then turned by Wyer to send a message by hand to William Grainger of Salem, asking "on what
principle will you take 1,000 dollars interest on the Polly & Betsy". Grainger replies declining "I have determined not to take any more risques at present". Salem postmark of 12 Jul. in red and manuscript "6" rate mark. Interesting item with

THE 'INDEMNITY OF SAINT DOMINGUE': In 1825 the French Parliament voted to demand compensation of 150 million gold francs (later
reduced to 60 million) from the Haitian government to compensate French exiles who were forced to leave Haiti after the 1803 War of Independence. A Royal Commission was established to decide upon the validity of claims on the Indemnity Fund which was
set up. The first letter dated 10 Feb. 1832 is a rejection of a claim by M. Carral, sent by P. Dessagnuez, a representative of the "Commission de l'Indemnite de L'Isle St. Domingue". The other letter dated 6 Dec. 1855 from the Indemnity Commissioners
to M. Morlot at Bourbonne regarding a payment from the Indemnity Fund. (2 items) (Image)
