THE KEVIN PREECE - NAPOLEON'S RETREAT FROM MOSCOW continued...
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
381   imageFRENCH OFFICER RECUPERATING FROM FROSTBITE IN BERLIN - LETTER TO PARIS VIA HAMBURG; 23 Dec. 1812 EL (some reinforced folds and a closed tear slightly affecting the address at top right; almost complete typed transcript & translation) from Captain (later Maréchal) de Castellane (1788-1862) recuperating from frostbite (see previous lot) in "Berlin" to his father in Paris with a faint "PRUSSE/PAR HAMBOURG" on the front and a fine red 3-ring Paris cds (1 Feb.) on the flap, charged "12". The contents - written entirely with his left hand - include; "[Letter] No.130… I hope you slept well... I'm having trouble getting used to straw in Berlin so for a few days it's hard to get used to a bed... I bought this morning a very ugly post-chaise for 500 l. because it is probable that within 15 days I will leave for Paris and that in 3 weeks I will kiss my excellent parents... The King of Bavaria has granted me six crosses but awaiting of course the authorization of the Emperor... My hand is doing very well. I only have very minor pains. One of the most unfortunate inconveniences of my condition is that I cannot give a full account of my days to my excellent father. Writing with my left hand is not easy and what's more it tires my right hand because I have to hold my paper with the thumb which is not frozen... Yesterday I was presented to the Queen of Hardenberg, tomorrow it will be to the King. My [letter] No.129 only left yesterday because the Estafette doesn't come exactly every day...". Rare insight into the dreadful damage caused by the frost on the Retreat from Moscow. [Ex Soluphil auction, June 2011; lot 100, realised 1,892 euros inc. BP.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, GERMAN STATES (Image)

382   imageTHE AFTERMATH - VOLTIGEUR's LETTER EX BERLIN WITH RED "No.10/GRANDE-ARMEE" MARK; 23 Dec. 1812 EL (minor creasing) from "Berlin" (in the Garrison there) to Liege charged "8" with a mainly fine red "No.10/GRANDE-ARMEE" mark (filing crease) nicely placed on the front. The sender was "Jean Pierre Hencare[?], Voltigeur au 76eme R[egimen]t De Ligne, Bataillon Angereauron a Berlin ou suivant le Corps". This 76th Regiment was in the XI Corps that was formed in Bavaria and was in Russia in Nov./Dec. 1812 (Kovno, Vilna & Ozmiana, 18 Nov. to 12 Dec.); presumably it was now recuperating in Berlin. Well worthy of transcription and translation.Cross Reference: FRANCE, GERMAN STATES (Image)

BATTLE OF POLOTSK, ETC.; 21 Jan. 1813 EL (in German; slight creasing) from "Berlin" to France with fine red "No.10/GRANDE-ARMEE" (light fold) on the front, fine 6 Feb. 1813 EL from "Posen" to Holland written by C.S.W. van Hogendorp (son of Napoleon's ADC) at whose wedding Napoleon was a witness with "PRUSSE/P.HAMBOURG" (mentions his having been at the 17-20 Oct. 1812 Battle of Polotsk), and 7 Feb. 1813 EL with near fine black "No.22/GRANDE-ARMEE" sent from "Dessau" (Saxony) to Fougeres (turned & re-posted to Renne with fine "FOUGERES" mark. 384   imagePART EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE BURNING OF MOSCOW IN RED "No.45/GRANDE-ARMEE" COVER; Undated E (probably of early 1813; badly stained by old repairs and parts of flaps lost) with unsigned contents and a mainly very fine red "No.45/GRANDE ARMEE" mark (last 2 letters affected by stain) nicely placed on the front. It was addressed to a Miss Berthier care of Mrs. Mosle "Directrice des Diligences" in Montbard charged "6" and "9". The extraordinary contents [with almost full manuscript transcript + partial typed transcript with translation] seem to be a reminiscence of the writer's recent experiences in the Russian Campaign with mention of the Battle of Borodino and with a gripping first-hand account of being in Moscow from the very start (13th Sept. 1812) when the fires were set by the Russians. Inc.; “…of Moscow I will never forget anything... the cold and the famine that have harvested many people in such a short time and in a manner equally terrible and equally unfortunate. We were all far from believing as we marched on this beautiful city of Moscow, gaining the advantage every day over our enemies, notably at the famous Battle of Mosaic [Borodino] which took place on September 7, which the French had been forced into... [then the] retreat; we were all greatly deceived because according to the rapid progress... [of our] army, we only had a glorious peace to achieve, but with our entry into this... [city?] on the 13th of September, raised our hopes of taking... this [most] beautiful city of this vast country which was abandoned... Until the famous Prince Constantine who was the governor & who... released all the convicts [from prison?]... under a clear promise [of pardon?], and who reduced this city to ashes... there is said that there were 3,000 houses & 700 palaces on fire... [they] were of rare beauty. This fire was fuelled by a very violent wind. I slept two nights; the second of the houses I found started [to burn] so quickly that during the night I was obliged to dislodge three times & each time I moved away from the fire always 150 steps...". If only the whole letter had survived and we knew who wrote it...! Cross Reference: FRANCE, RUSSIA (Image)

Plus unusual and fine 9 Apr. 1813 EL from Ku[h]nsdorf to Orleans with ms "12" changed to "15" rate but most unusually without any handstruck marks and having a manuscript "Allemagne" at top right; from a Captain of the Grenadiers, "58 Regiment... 19th Regiment, Grande Armee, 3rd Corps, Division Souham".
