1123   imageFANCY BLUE-GREY-PRINTED ENVELOPE DECORATED BACK & FRONT SENT FROM LONDON TO DARTFORD; 4 May 1842 env. (minor creasing) prepaid with a faint and overstruck red "..../1D. PAID" Receiving House mark from London to "DARTFORD" (fine cds on reverse); there is a most attractive fancy frame printed around the edges of the address panel and a matching design around the four flaps. It was sealed with a diminutive gold "Emily" wafer (presumably the name of the sender). Postally used examples of any kind of fancy envelopes are very rare before 1850; this example is reminiscent of the famous Buchanan envelopes of 1840. Exhibition Item. 1124   imageDECORATIVE PRINTED ADVERTISING ENVELOPE SENT FROM EDINBURGH PRINTSELLER "HUGH PATON"; Fine 23 Mar. 1843 E prepaid "2[d]" (red crayon) in cash from Edinburgh to a "Writer" (Scots work for solicitor at this date) in Ayr; but it was also prepaid an extra 1d Late Fee with a mainly fine red boxed Edinburgh "PAID/1d EXTRA" on the front (slightly overlapped by the red "PAID at EDINR." cds). There is a most attractive fancy frame printed around the edges of the address panel which is very reminiscent of the famous Buchanan envelopes of 1840; Buchanan was a solicitor and only used his designs for business mail too. It may have been inspired by the 1840 'Post Magazine' design too. The contents are a printed list of books & prints available from Paton and are headed by an attractive coat-of-arms design. This kind of decorative commercial cover is very rare before 1850. Exhibition Item. 1125   imageSUPERB BLACK & GOLD PRINTED DECORATIVE ENVELOPE WITH 1d RED TIED BY DISTINCTIVE DUBLIN MX; Extraordinary and colourful 16 Feb. 1842 decorative envelope used from Dublin to "Mary-Borough" with 1841 1d Red (OI; plate 29, very near 4m) tied by a very fine Distinctive Dublin Maltese Cross and by the partly fine "MARYBOROUGH" double-arcs arrival cds; there is a fine red Dublin diamond d.s. on the reverse. The all-over design of fancy gold/black floral motifs covers both the back & front of the envelope and there is a man in period dress on the front and a matching female figure on the flap. Was this a belated Valentine letter? One of only a handful of recorded 1840s stamped covers with gold decorative designs. Ideal Exhibition Item for any Irish, 1d Reds or Cancellations collection. [Ex M. Whyte auction, 9 Aug. 2014; lot 416, realised £1,742 inc. BP.] [Illustrated in BPPP, p.345.] [AIEP, D. MacDonnell Cert. 1127   imageSAMPLES OF NO VALUE ENDORSED QV COVERS TO FRANCE/ITALY + 6d-RATE TO SPAIN & P.O. NOTICE; 1862/67 trio from Bradford (1862 to France with 2d Blue + 6d) or London (1866/7 pair to Turin with 2d Blue + 6d or 2d + 3x4d's) all endorsed (in French/Italian) as containing "Samples of No Value", but all clearly prepaid at the full letter rates; perhaps they were endorsed to avoid import problems in their countries of destination? Plus May 1870 EL ex Manchester to Madrid with 6d Mauve at letter rate but unusually having 2 strikes (one partial) of the Madrid 'Spider' obliterator on the reverse. Plus a 30 Jan. 1880 PO Notice ref. new size/weight limits for "Patterns or Samples to France or Algeria". Rare group. 1128   imageSAMPLES OF NO VALUE ENDORSED QV 3-COLOUR FRANKING COVER TO ITALY AT 4s-1d LETTER RATE; 9 Aug. 1862 EL (very thin paper to reduce postage weight) from London to Turin endorsed "Samples of No Value" in Italian but franked for the full 1 3/4 to 2oz 4s/- rate plus a 1d Late Fee with 1/- Green (3) + 6 Lilac (2) + 1d Red 'stars' all tied by fair to fine London "13" tall barred ovals. There was no GB Sample Post service to Italy until 1864, so perhaps it was endorsed in this way to avoid import problems in the country of destination? Rare thus. 1129   imageSAMPLES OF NO VALUE ENDORSED QV LATE FEE PAID COVER TO ITALY WITH BOTH "12" & "13" CANCELS; 24 Sept. 1863 E (very thin paper to reduce postage weight) from London to Turin (same correspondence as previous lot) endorsed "Samples of No Value" in Italian but franked for the regular 1s/- letter rate plus a 1d Late Fee with 1/- Green Small Letters + 1d Red 'stars'; the 1/- tied by the usual London Foreign Branch barred "13" numeral, but the 1d Red remarkably tied by the matching "1"" (for Late Fee mail) cancel. There was no GB Sample Post service to Italy until 1864, so perhaps it was endorsed in this way to avoid import problems in the country of destination? Unique(?) combination of two different London numerals on one cover. [Illustrated in BPPP, p.486.] Cross Reference: OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, LATE FEE/TOO LATE MAIL, ITALY, 1854-65 1d REDS (Image)

1130   imageSAMPLES OF NO VALUE ENDORSED QV 3-COLOUR FRANKING COVER TO ITALY AT 2s-2d LETTER RATE; 14 Nov. 1866 E (thin paper to reduce postage weight) from London to Genoa endorsed "Samples of No Value" in French but franked for the full (½-1oz) 2s/- rate plus a 2d Late Fee with 6d Lilac (2) + 4d Vermilion (3) + 2d Blue (pl.9; filing crease), all tied by fair to fine London "46 46" twin barred ovals (use on 2d Late Fee mail). Even though there was a GB Sample Post service to Italy from 1864, this letter clearly did not weigh from 16 to 24 oz (for the 2s-0d Samples rate) and had writing inside, while not being left open nor readily openable for inspection, as per Sample Post regulations. So perhaps it was endorsed in this way to avoid import problems in the country of destination? Rare thus. ("For Postal Examination open at perforated line - the flap is gummed for re-fastening" printed on reverse flap) tied by messy "19" barred London numeral with part "LO[...]" cds alongside and addressed to "Messrs Murdoch & Doddrell, Glasgow" (a well-known firm of sugar merchants). Correctly posted Sample Post covers such as these are very rare before 1880 and very scarce at any date. Good pair. MORISON & CO." imprints, franked by 2d Blue (pl.12) + 6d Mauve (pl.8; wing margin creased over edge at top) tied by fair Dundee duplexes for the 8d (above 4oz & up to 8oz) Patterns rate. There is also fine red oval London "PD"; Morison & Co. are recorded as having been "spinners & manufacturers" at this date, so the contents were almost certainly some kind of material. Plus 27 Feb. 1886 open-ended wrapper to Saxony endorsed "Pattern Post" with a 2d Dull Lilac tied by a very fine "MANCHESTER" Squared Circle. Very few QV Pattern Post covers have been recorded. Rare pair. [The Dundee item illustrated in BPPP, p.495.] (2 covers)Cross Reference: OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, 1858-69 2d PLATES, LANCASHIRE - MANCHESTER, SCOTLAND (Image) (Image2)

1134   imageSAMPLE POST UNDERPAID PACKET WITH 2d BLUES(3) & "2s/2d" CHARGE MADE UP OF UPP(?) H.S. MARKS; 15 July 1878 part large wrapper (understandable creasing and wear but very attractive) endorsed "Sample Post" back and front and addressed to Manchester; franked with 2d Blue strip of three (pl.15) tied by fair "CARNARVON" duplexes, but endorsed "Over 18ozs" with initials and having a cleverly constructed 2s-2d Postage Due mark (1s-1d deficiency, doubled) beside the partial boxed Manchester "[More to p]ay/above [18] oz/498" mark. The "2s/2d" charge was composed of two separate very fine strikes of the distinctive handstruck "2" of Manchester (not recorded?) that have been applied either side of a manuscript slash with "s" and "d" written above each "2"! One of the heaviest QV underpaid covers that we can recall having seen. It should have had nine 2d Blues and a 1d red! Unique?! (slight wear; small scuff beside stamp) sent locally in the village of "Collingham, Notts." with a 1d Red tied by two faint "COLLINGHAM" thimble cds's. The design is exceptional; an 'all over' floral/geometric frame to the address plus all-over matching designs on the flaps; there is a tiny "ENTD. STAT. HALL M.W. & Co." imprint along the LH edge. The date suggests that it might have enclosed an early Valentine? One of the most colourful 1870s covers that we have seen. Exhibition Quality.
