1110   image'LONDON GAZETTE' EXCEPTIONALLY SENT AT LETTER RATE WITH 2d BLUE +1d RED +1/- GREEN FOR THE 6oz-7oz RATE; 16 Sept. 1864 front/back pages of 'The London Gazette' (some stains etc., but attractive and with complete address, having v. fine red 1d Tax Stamp at foot of front page; folded to show Tax Stamp beside postal franking) to "Much Wenlock, Salop". Endorsed "Letter Rate" because the extra 1s-2d was necessary to speed up delivery (there is a 17 Sept. arrival cds) whereas the usual 2d newspaper rate (1d Red + the 1d Tax Stamp) would not have been nearly so rapid. Franked by 2d Blue (pl.9), 1d Red (pl.80?) and 1/- green (pl.1) all tied by fine London diamond "2" vertical ovals. It is very rare to find a newspaper fully stamped for the letter rate. 1119   imageFREE FRONT WITH SPECTACULAR PRINTED DECORATION - SENT FROM "FOOTSCRAY" TO WINDSOR CASTLE; 6 Oct. 1839 free front (cleverly attached to the flapped reverse of a small c.1850 envelope) headed & signed by "[Viscount] Sydney" (1805-90) from "FOOTSCRAY" (fine cds; the Sydney family mansion, Frognal House, was there) addressed to "The Countess of Sandwich, Windsor Castle" with a fine red London crowned "FREE" transit cds. There is a superb floral/avian design printed (in black with a couple of gold highlights) as a frame to the address (intriguingly the envelope was used upside down by Sydney!) which would perhaps have done better than the Mulready if it had been used by the Post Office! Sydney was a member of the Royal Household for many years as well as being a politician. Only a handful of postally used pre-1841 fancy envelope/wrapper designs have been recorded, most of which are in the Fryer Collection (see following lots). Exhibition Quality. 1120   imageFREE FRONT WITH SPECTACULAR PRINTED DECORATION - SENT FROM "CHIPPENHAM" TO LONDON TO DOVER; 1 Dec. 1839 free front with a most attractive floral/shells design printed in an unusual gold/purple shade franked by the "[Duke of] Beaufort" (1792-1853) from "Chippenham" to "Lord Willoughby de Eresby" (1782-1865; Lord Chamberlain at the time) in London with a mainly fine scarce "Chippenham/Penny Post" at top left and manuscript "1" charge, both of which were crossed through when the 1d was paid and the letter redirected to Dover with a very fine red 2-ring crowned London "FREE" cds, though the faint London "To Pay 1d only " mark not crossed out. Printed pictorial covers of any kind are extremely rare prior to 1840. What a pity this design was not chosen instead of the Mulready; it certainly rivals the later 'Buchanan' envelopes that sell for £000's! Only a handful of postally used pre-1841 fancy envelope/wrapper designs have been recorded, most of which are in the Fryer Collection (see previous & following lots). Exhibition Quality.
