(faults) from Demerara to "Cooeroo Demerara River", bearing 1882 type-set 1c magenta pair(SG type 26, one stamp defective at right), each cancelled with a double ring ds with ms "Please do not/attempt to remove/Stamps" at top left. Marked in blue "stamps out of issue" and charged "O4" cents double deficiency. The reverse with T.P.O. DEMERARA RIVER/B. GUIANA" double ring cds (Proud D2). A rare item. Note: De La Rue delivered replacement stamps on 27 Jan. 1882. The Governor hinted that the provisionals should be kept against a future shortage. No record appears to exist of instructions to destroy. (Image)

MARK ON INGOING COVER EX G.B.; Attractive 29 Nov 1946 env. ex London with GB KGVI 3d tied by "FIELD POST [OFFICE]/406" cds (Polish Army in London) addressed to "Harbin, Manchuria, China" endorsed ms in red ink "To" & blue crayon "BAOR" with fine dotted "CHANG CHUN" backstamp (located between Peking and Harbin) but the letter apparently got no further as it has fine red boxed "Mail route to destination/blockaded, return to sender" & "UNDELIVERED FOR REASON STATED/RETURN TO SENDER" hs's on the front. [A similar cover sold in our 3/6/2015 sale 776 for £850 + BP]. Also 1949 env. addressed to Chung King with large violet boxed "SERVICE SUSPENDED/RETURN TO SENDER" hs posted during the HMS Amethyst Yangtze incident. Fine pair. 1620   imageSUCCESSFUL FRAUDULENT RE-USAGE OF 1858 4Sk ON ODENSE COVER TO BOGENSE: Extraordinary 9 Mar. 1861 E from Odense to Bogense with 1858 4sk Chestnut (4 margins; tiny chip at top right within margin) tied by fine Odense "51" Numeral with supporting v. fine blue "ODENSE/[posthorn]" cds alongside, and a partly fine "1861" "BOGENSE" cds across the join. Very careful examination of the stamp shows that it had been used before - and presumably cleaned - as there are light traces of the rings of a different cancel beneath the Odense Numeral! This fraud was not spotted by the Post Office. This is believed to be a unique example of the successful re-usage of this issue on cover. Very Rare. With Jensen/Hoiland Cert. (1998). (Image)
