841   imageFIRST DAY OF UNIFORM PENNY POSTAGE - PREPAID 1d-RATE COVER WITH "PAID/AT/BIRMINGHAM"; 10 Jan. 1840 EL (clearly dated inside, in filing note and in datestamp; mourning black-edged paper) prepaid from "19 Ann St., Birm." to Bristol with a bold claret-red Manuscript "1[d]" prepayment mark on the front beside a fair orange-red boxed "PAID/AT/BIRMINGHAM"mark which matches the fair but legible "BIRMINGHAM" cds (filing fold) on the lower flap. The writer acknowledges receipt of "the £20". Birmingham was one of the larger offices never to use a Handstruck UPP 1d mark. Rare cover posted on this most important date.Cross Reference: WARWICKSHIRE - BIRMINGHAM, UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD, FIRST DAY COVERS (Image)

842   imageJAMES CHALMERS - POSTAL REFORMER & TREASURY COMPETITION ENTRANT - CIRCULAR REF. MAIL COACHES: 1 June 1841 privately printed Anti-Sabbatarian circular entitled “REMARKS ON THE EFFECTS OF MAIL-COACH STOPPAGE ON THE SABBATH-DAY” (folds to fit album page) giving the texts of a 26 Mar. 1841 letter from Chalmers that appeared in the Aberdeen & Perthshire papers (being taken up by the London ‘Sun’ and other papers soon after). He added extra paragraphs for this circular version. This circular – the only example in private hands – was found in 1966, in the personal papers of Chalmers’ friend George Duncan (1791-1878; an M.P. and wealthy Dundee merchant) with some original Chalmers Treasury Essays. He outlines his opinion that by stopping mail coaches on Sundays would hamper both trade and communications. An unusual pro-Sunday Working Propaganda item. 843   imageSCOTTISH MISSENT, TOO LATE, HANDSTRUCK "2", 1844-TYPE NUMERAL, ETC. ALL ON ONE COVER: Extraordinary 10 Aug. 1846 EL sent locally with ms "2" charge on the front to "Mr. Cameron, Post Master, Bonaw" (ref. a lost parcel) which the addressee has clearly then used as a handstamp Proof-strike sheet; it has fine black hs "2" UPP marks (2), an unclear "48" Numeral, a red boxed "BONAW" ds (13 Aug. 1846), and the only recorded (?) examples of both a red boxed "MISSENT/TO/BONAW" (partly albino) and a mainly fine fancy black "Too Late". Recent research has shown that this John Cameron was convicted in 1847 of forgery (of PO Money Orders, etc.) and was transported to Australia (where he became a successful journalist). At least one other similar Bonaw 'Proof Strikes Sheet' has been recorded.Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD (Image)

TREASURY ESSAYS, ETC.
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
850   imageJAMES BOGARDUS & HENRY COFFIN's QUEEN's HEAD DESIGN - 1929 'ROYAL' REPRINT IN BLACK; 1929 "Royal" reprint in black on white paper (very fine) of this very stamp-like design from the original 1839 Bogardus/Coffin Treasury Essay brass die found among Rowland Hill's papers in the 1920s; printed in a very small quantity for King George V and a few other notable philatelists. The brass die for this Essay is still held in the Queen's Philatelic Collection. Bogardus & Coffin were one of the Treasury Competition winners, probably because of this Essay's Queen's Head design. [A similar example in Cavendish's Jan. 2012 'Thompson' auction, lot 24, realised £382.] Rare; few known. (Image)
