1912: Waterlow Die Proof for proposed ⅓ trangka value, engraved and hand-painted in deep bright blue & white on thin white wove paper (61 x 100 mm.), prepared by Waterlow & Sons on instructions from the Dalai Lama
whilst in exile in India, from a drawing made by one of his associates in exile, together with an 'albino' engraved impression of the Die on thin greyish wove paper (60 x 65 mm). Similar to the issued design, the Essay was not acceptable to the
Tibetans probably on the grounds of expense. Beautiful and of great rarity Waterfall #2. Note: This Essay was discovered in 1938 amongst the effects of a deceased overseas representative of Waterlow & Sons Ltd. and was prepared in the early
months of 1912 prior to the Dalai Lama's return to Tibet. The design was based upon the current 1902-11 Edward VII issue of India with the corner spandrels copied from the issued 1 anna carmine and the King's head replaced by the Tibetan Lion in the
vignette. Provenance: Collection "Everest", Harmers, London, 20 Dec 1995, lot 216 (Image 1)

First Issue 1912: A letter to Sir Charles Bell written by S.W. Laden La from Gyantse (Dec 20) with Christmas and New Year good wishes stating "I enclose a new Tibetan stamp and a silk scarf of greeting"...the stamp applied to
the top of the letter being an imperforate Proof of the ⅓ tr. value printed on thin paper in a suffused "myrtle green" shade - an apparently unique Colour Trial or Proof unlisted by Waterfall. Note: Illustrated in "Tibet Stamps & Postal History"
by Steve Chazen & Danny Wong on page 236. Provenance: Christie's, London, 14 June 1990, lot 1145 (Image 1)

1912/50: First Issue 1/6 tr. bright green in an unused complete sheet of twelve subjects on native wove paper, with large even margins all round the sheet, early clear printing showing the dryness of the print at top and the
depth of colour more prevalent at base. A fine and scarce sheet, sold together with a vivid green block of six unused (pos. 1-2 / 5-6 / 9-10). Note: The sheets of twelve stamps of the First Issue were printed from one wooden block (Waterfall) or
metal block (Haverbeck) and thus plating the stamps is not as difficult as the 1933 issue where the clichés were removeable and thus could be altered and moved on the sheet. The paper is machine made of greatly varying thickness and quality. All
Tibetan stamps of the early period were issued without gum. The 'inks' used were small tins of enamel paint spread on the woodblock, then the paper was placed on top of the block and rolled. Provenance: Collection Tony & Pat Wheeler, RL, Basel,
