6145 cover imageFirst Issue 1922: 1/6 tr. olive-green and ⅓ tr. blue used on large circa 1916 cover from the 13th Dalai Lama in Lhasa to Charles Alfred Bell C.M.G., Political Officer in Sikkim, tied by circular "LHASSA P.O." bilingual handstamp in black (Hellrigl T13) with rare "PHARI" all Tibetan ornamental postmark superbly struck alongside (Hellrigl T34). Reverse with Tibetan language address translated above (possibly by the recipient who learnt Tibetan) stating "Through Lhading, 4th rank (official) / Trade Agent -- and Gyantse" with near complete 13th Dalai Lama's red powdered pigment on embossed black seal with black surround. A stunning and rare cover. Note: Charles Alfred Bell C.M.G. received this honour in the New Year's honours list in January 1915, he resigned his post as Political Officer for Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet in 1919, but was sent to Lhasa in 1920 as a special Ambassador. He was knighted in 1922 for his services on behalf of the British and Tibetan governments over the future boundaries of Tibet. Therefore this cover was probably sent in 1918 or 1919 prior to his journey to Lhasa in 1920 (Image 1) (Image 2)
