exceptional and highly specialised study collection of the 1916 provisional surcharge issue, presented on exhibition-style pages and showing an unusually comprehensive treatment of settings, positional varieties and sheet reconstruction. Included:
detailed study of the principal surcharges, including: 1 c. on 2 c. (Surcharge One), 2c on 5c (Surcharge Two), Additional provisional types and settings, extensive breakdown of settings and positions, with annotated examples illustrating: horizontal
and vertical strip types, spacing, alignment and typographic differences, constant plate flaws and setting characteristics, large multiples of major importance, including: near-complete and complete sheets (including 1 c. on 2 c. and 2 c. on 5 c.),
long strips and positional blocks enabling plating reconstruction, significant emphasis on overprint varieties, including: broken and malformed characters, spacing anomalies and misplaced settings, unlisted or previously unrecorded varieties,
valuable reference material for reconstruction of entire surcharge, settings, rarely encountered in such depth, postal history component includes: commercial and registered covers, mixed frankings of Ordinary and Official surcharges, scarce and
notable usages, including: rare mixed franking of Surcharge Four on cover (only recorded example), usages showing correct rates and transitional postal handling. Condition generally fine to very fine for this notoriously difficult issue, with some

1917/18: An exceptionally well developed and exhibition collection of the 1917 and 1918 provisional surcharge issues, presented on six pages and distinguished by its depth of study, rare multiples, and strong
postal history component. The 1917 surcharge issue is represented in considerable detail, beginning with the 4 c. on 25 c. of 1897. A range of surcharge types is included, from normal settings through to more unusual forms such as the “FCUR” variety,
triple overprints including one applied sideways, and various states of double bar obliterators. These are complemented by two blocks of four, each illustrating positional characteristics and the distribution of these varieties across the sheet.
Equally notable is the treatment of the 5 c. on 30 c. of 1906, including both the ordinary and Official issues. Alongside normal examples, the collection includes the “FIV” variety, and is anchored by an outstanding block of six of the Official
surcharge (largest recorded multiple). The positional arrangement of varieties within this block is clearly visible, and multiples of any of the 1917 surcharges are rarely encountered in such form. The postal history of the 1917 issue is a particular
strength. A registered cover sent from Monrovia to Bern 1918 bears both of the 1917 surcharge values, correctly paying the combined overseas and registration rate. The inclusion of earlier surcharge issues within the franking enhances its appeal. The
1918 surcharge issue, comprising the 3 c. on 10 c. provisionals with both ordinary and Official stamps are present, with a variety of surcharge types including reversed figures, double surcharges in differing colours, and mixed settings. Multiples
are again well represented, including pairs and a block of four showing double surcharge characteristics. A highlight of the collection is a complete sheet of fifty of the Official Service issue, from Setting Four. This impressive multiple clearly
displays positional features across the sheet and includes an example of a triple overprint, noted as unlisted. As a visual and technical centrepiece, it significantly elevates the importance of the group. The postal history for the 1918 issue is
equally compelling. A postcard sent to Hamburg in 1921 bears a solo 3 c. surcharge franking, representing a scarce single-rate. Another cover addressed to Newport, Rhode Island, combines the 3 c. surcharge with earlier issues to make up a double
overseas rate. Condition throughout is generally fine to very fine, with only the minor faults to be expected in material of this nature. A cohesive and thoughtfully assembled study (Image 1)

The 1903 Perkins Bacon 3 c. Inland Postage Issue. This study presents a comprehensive examination of the 1903 3 cent Inland Postage issue of Liberia, produced by Perkins Bacon & Co., tracing its development
from initial concept through to issued stamps and post-production material. The issue replaced the earlier 1897 design and introduced a refined engraved portrait format characteristic of Perkins Bacon’s high-quality line-engraved production. The
material set-out on nine exhibition pages, comprising over 40 items, includining multiples and blocks, illustrates the full evolution of the stamp: from artist’s sketched essays (1), photo essay (1) and die proofs (3), through an extensive range of
colour trials (8) and plate proofs (7) on varying papers, to the issued stamps (including scarce perf. 12) with their perforation varieties and production anomalies. Special attention is given to the rich body of pre-production material, including
progressive die proofs and colour trials that reveal the design and printing process in detail. The issued stamps demonstrate variations in perforation, printing, and occasional errors, while the Official “O S” overprints, including a full sheet of
50 and a vertrical pair lower stamp "Missing OS", highlight their development and associated varieties. The study concludes with post-production sample stamps and archival material, providing a complete and coherent overview of one of the most
thoroughly documented Liberian issues of the Perkins Bacon period. Fine to very fine throughout, a valuable intact well researched study of the 1903 Liberty Head (Image 1)

Perkins Bacon Pictorial Issue 1906: Elephant 1 c. green & black, Approved Die Proof. An exceptional and unique approved Die Proof of the 1 cent “Elephant”, engraved and printed by Perkins Bacon & Co. The proof is
closely cropped and mounted on card, representing the final approved state of the design prior to transfer to plate. Of particular importance is the reverse, bearing manuscript "Approved" and the violet handstamp of Perkins Bacon "PERKINS, BACON
& Co., LIMITED / ENGRAVERS / SOUTHWARK BRIDGE BLDGS. / LONDON, S.E.", confirming its status within the official production process. This piece stands as a key artefact in the development of Liberia’s pictorial series, illustrating both the
engraving quality and the formal approval procedures of the printer. Most attractive and rare; the sole recorded example (Image 1)

both of fresh colour, large to huge margins all round, no gum. These are genuine production errors, the result of reversed vignette impressions during the printing process by Perkins Bacon & Co., and are not manufactured or contrived varieties.
Such accidental inverted centres from this issue are of great rarity, with very few recorded, particularly in proof format. A highly important and visually striking duo (Image 1)

1903: President Gibson Robertsport registration stamp 10 c. magenta & black, in combination with 1906, Pictorial issue Chimpanzee 5 c.ultramarine & black, used on a cover from Robertsport to Liverpool, dated 22 June
1910, tied by clear “REGISTERED ROBERTSPORT LIBERIA JUN 22 10” datestamp in black, with rare large violet Robertsport registration label (No. 135), a distinctive and scarce format used for a limited period. Address rubbed out. Reverse, transit
marking “REGISTERED G.P.O. SIERRA LEONE 25 JUN 10” and arrival “REGISTERED LIVERPOOL 8 JY 10”. The franking of 15 c. correctly pays the 5 c. overseas letter rate plus 10c registration fee. Of particular significance, this example is one of only three
recorded covers with the violet Robertsport registration labels (known to have been in use approximately May 1909 to June 1910) (Image 1)

Perkins Bacon Pictorial Issue 1906: Executive Mansion & President Barclay $5 red-brown & blavk, perf. 14, an unused example, of fresh colour, with variety "Inverted Centre". A striking and genuinely scarce accidental
inverted center, printed by Perkins Bacon & Co. This $5 high value exhibits a true production error, where the central vignette has been printed inverted relative to the frame; an error arising during the bi-colour printing process. Unlike many
philatelic “inverts” created deliberately or as favour items, this example is a genuine postal production variety. Has faint corner crease, large part og., very fresh and fine. Inverted centers of Liberia from this period are seldom encountered,
particularly on the higher denominations, making this a highly desirable exhibition and specialist item. Rare. Provenance: Robert H. Cunliffe, Spink Shreves Galleries, June 2009, lot 1233 (Image 1)

Perkins Bacon Pictorial Issue 1906: Extensive Specialised Unused Collection with Specimen Material, Issued Stamps, Varieties, and Complete Sheets. A substantial and highly specialised collection, formed as a
detailed study of the production and issued characteristics of the series, comprising many hundreds of stamps and an exceptional range of multiples and complete sheets. The collection is presented on exhibition pages and includes: a Specimen set,
including examples with black, red, and blue overprints, offering insight into the early stages of the issue. A comprehensive representation of the issued stamps, covering the full range of denominations, with attention to design types, shades, and
printings. Examples showing both principal perforation types (Perf 13½ & Perf 14), with additional shade and format variations. A strong group of imperforate stamps and multiples, including pairs and larger pieces, many with original gum.
Perforation varieties and errors, including partial perforations and unusual separations. A remarkable assembly of complete and large-format sheets, representing numerous denominations (including 2 c., 5 c., 10 c., 15 c., 20 c., 25 c., 30 c., 50 c.
and $1 values), many with full margins, illustrating sheet layout and production characteristics. Additional material illustrating paper types and watermark positions, including unwatermarked examples. This holding provides a broad and coherent
overview of the 1906 issue from production through final form, with particular strength in multiples and sheet material. The presence of numerous complete sheets offers significant scope for further study of layout, printing methods, and plate
characteristics. A collection of clear research and exhibition potential, with an uncommon depth of material for this issue (Image 1)

1910/17: An attractive group of eleven 1910/12 Inland issues and twelve later 1914 pictorial series covers with accompanying unused stamps. A strong focus on overseas mail and route markings. Covers to Germany and
the United States show correct mixed frankings paying the 5 c. overseas rate, including combinations of inland and earlier issues. One cover displays a scarce and desirable usage of a 1906 2 c. revenue stamp accepted for postage. Maritime routes are
well represented, with several items carried via “Southampton Ship Letter” and Cape Palmas, reflecting typical West African mail transmission. Wartime correspondence, notably a censored 1917 cover from Buchanan to Stockholm via the Deutscher
Hilfsverein, illustrating POW-related mail through neutral Sweden. Additional European bound covers reinforce the period context and Officials from the same issue. Further items include 1914 pictorial issue usages on cover, including registered and
