4214 */bof/(*) image1909: Exceptional and highly important specialised collection of thirty-eight Die and Plate proofs for the Perkins Bacon Pictorial Issue, comprising an extensive multi-page study (8) of the production process from final die stage through plate proofs and issued colour trials, on paper no gum, and including numerous large multiples. The collection includes a 30 c. "President Barclay" final die proof, the majority of plate proofs in black for values from 1 c. to 75 c. in blocks of four (14) and pairs (3), as well as issued and trial colour plate proofs in a wide range of formats. Particularly notable are the progressive stages, including separate frame and vignette proofs, composite trials, and colour development pieces across multiple denominations. Of outstanding significance are the large multiples, including two 30 c. blocks of 25 (in deep green without gum & carmine-red with gum, ex Varaschini), both described as the largest recorded multiples of this value, and an extraordinary 20 c. frame plate proof in a block of 35 in issued colour, likewise the largest known multiple. Additional highlights include rare vignette and frame trials, thin card printings, and an inverted colour example for the 5 c. value, together illustrating the full complexity of the Perkins Bacon production process. Several pieces bear manuscript annotations and production markings. Condition varies as to be expected for these archival pre-production material, with some toning, creasing and mounting traces, but overall well preserved, with many fine and visually striking items. A remarkable and comprehensive holding of great depth and importance, effectively constituting a near-complete study of the design and production of the 1909 Liberia pictorial issue. An exhibition-level assemblage of the highest calibre, and a rare opportunity to acquire such a cohesive and significant body of Perkins Bacon proof material (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9)

4216 bof/(*) imagePerkins Bacon Pictorial Issue 1906: Mandingos $2 Vignette Plate Proof Block of twelve in black on white wove paper. Exceptional vignette plate proof for the $2 Mandingos value, printed by Perkins Bacon & Co. A remarkable block of 12, representing the largest recorded multiple of this vignette in existence. 4218 cover image1909: Pictorial Issue selection of postal History covers and cards (15), including Official usage, Registered Mail, and Maritime Routes (1910-1918). A highly attractive and unusually diverse group of postal history items illustrating the usage of Liberia’s 1909 Pictorial issue and Official overprints, with strong representation of registered mail, overseas destinations, and scarce postal routes. The lot includes a fine registered cover from Harper to Pennsylvania (1910) franked with a multiple franking of 1909 surcharges bearing the rare Harper large violet registered label (2 reported), alongside a companion registered cover Monrovia to New York (1911). Additional registered usages include covers to Philadelphia (1910), New York (1914), and Germany (1914), demonstrating a range of rates and frankings, including Official stamps. A particularly interesting section comprises maritime and transit usages, including a postcard from Monrovia to Frankfurt carried via the Spanish Royal Mail Line with Spanish shipping cancellation (1911), and several covers routed via European ports, reflecting Liberia’s postal connections through commercial shipping networks. Also present are multiple covers and cards to international destinations including Stockholm (1916), and various U.S. cities, many showing mixed frankings of pictorial issues and Officials. Official mail is well represented, including covers from the American Consular Service in Monrovia to Accra (1917) and other destinations, with correct Official franking and postal markings. A number of items show unusual or scarce usages, including combinations of triangular pictorials on cover, double-rate frankings, and mixed issue usages. Condition is mixed as typical for Liberian postal history of the period, a scarce and informative assembly (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10)

Includes 66 trials of the 1 c., 2 c., 5 c., 10 c., 15 c., 20 c., 25 c., 30 c., 50 c., 75 c. as well as the high-values $1, $2 and $5, showing a broad spectrum of approved, rejected and experimental colours. Feather issues in varied shades and includes two rare Essays one in deep purple and the other in orange. The 50 c. Mudskipper and 75 c. values are represented by several colour trials including crossed out and revised shades, while the high values appear in multiple colour Proofs including official service tones. The group clearly demonstrates the iterative design and colour selection process undertaken for Liberia’s first fully realised pictorial series, with many pieces annotated or in distinctive trial shades seldom encountered in quantity. 4228 cover image1918: Pictorial Issue, use of Plate Proofs on registered cover from Monrovia to London, franked with Symbols of Liberia 5 c. blue & black, Oil Palm 15 c. black & green, and Liberia College $2 purplish-black (unissued colour), all tied by "REGISTERED MONROVIA LIBERIA 20.II.18" circular datestamps, alongside Monrovia registration etiquette (No. 3703). Addressed to Henry L. Hayman, London (Consul General of Liberia and contractor for the issue). Carried via Freetown with transit “REGISTERED G.P.O. SIERRA LEONE 25 FE 18”, and with London registered hooded receiving datestamp “12 MR 18” and local registered marking of the same date on reverse. The franking is of particular significance: the 15 c. plate was hardened in September 1916, whereas the 5 c. and $2 were not hardened until July 1918; archival records indicate deliveries to Liberia in December 1916 but do not clarify whether these were finished stamps or proofs. The 5 c. and $2 values here are from unhardened plates, and the $2 shows the characteristic purplish-black shade distinct from the issued colour. The 15 c. frame is in a very deep black. It is generally accepted that all three adhesives are plate proofs used postally prior to official stamp issue. Large format cover with vertical filing fold well clear of the adhesives, some light handling as expected for this type of usage. Otherwise fine. An early, rare and highly important usage of Liberian pictorial plate proofs on cover, of considerable exhibition significance. Note: The 15 c. plate was hardened 5 September 1916, the 5 c. and $2 were hardened 24 July 1918. Perkins Bacon records indicate stamps were delivered to Liberia 12 December 1916, but it is not known if they consisted of proofs or specimens. The 5 c and $2 stamps were made from unhardened plates. The $2 value is purplish-black, not the issued colour. the 15 c. frame is a very deep.black. The exhibitor believes all three adhesives are proofs, and used prior to the stamp issuance (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

A well-presented group of on six pages, comprising unused examples of the complete definitive set from 1 c. to $5, including the distinctive triangular 25 c. “Traveller’s Palm,” all in fresh colours and generally fine to very fine condition. The issue is attractively represented and retains strong visual appeal throughout. The lot is further enhanced by a set of imperforate pairs (no gum) all with large to huge margins all round, providing a scarce and impressive insight into the unissued or special production formats of the series. In addition, the collection includes a comprehensive range of Official Service overprints "OS" (black or red), presented as both sets in singles and blocks of four. The material is neatly presented and would suit exhibition, specialist study, or further expansion. Some faults and toning to some. 4230 **/*/bof image1920: Provisional surcharge issue, including the President Gibson “5 Cents” surcharge in black on 10 c. registration stamps. Exceptional specialised study of the 1920 provisional surcharge issue, comprising approximately 17 exhibition pages of unused examples devoted to plating, settings and surcharge varieties, together with additional pages illustrating the related “THREE CENTS” and “FOUR CENTS” surcharges and their principal settings and overprint characteristics. A detailed and systematic reconstruction of the surcharge printings, including singles, pairs, strips, blocks and larger multiples, with extensive positional work illustrating the different settings and their evolution. The study identifies numerous constant plate varieties and surcharge characteristics, including inverted, double, triple and quadruple overprints, shifted and misplaced surcharges, missing elements, spacer varieties, typewritten surcharge and rare typographed errors. Particular highlights include scarce se-tenant combinations between panes, positional reconstructions of settings, and larger multiples demonstrating constant flaws and positional characteristics. The collection is further strengthened by the inclusion of rare and possibly unique configurations, including multiple overprint errors and reconstructed panes. Carefully annotated throughout, the pages reflect a high level of research and understanding of the issue, offering clear insight into the production process and the complex nature of the surcharge settings. Condition is generally fine to very fine for this notoriously difficult issue, with some expected faults in larger multiples. 4231 cover image1920: Surcharge Issue, group of covers and postal history items. A group of six covers and one piece, illustrating the postal use of the 1920 provisional surcharge issue, comprising a range of covers showing both local and overseas usages. Included is a notable Official envelope used locally within Monrovia, bearing the 1920 surcharge “Four Cents” on 2 c. rose & black with variety “Triple Surcharge” on one adhesive and “Double Surcharge” on a pair and representing a rare example of internal Liberian usage. Additional items show overseas correspondence to the United States, including a scarce non-philatelic single franking of the Robertsport 5 c. on 10 c. magenta & black sent to New York. Also to Europe (France & Germany), with mixed frankings including surcharged issues alongside earlier Liberian adhesives, demonstrating correct and occasionally unusual rate combinations. The group further includes a multiple franking on registered piece with the surcharge 5 c. on 10 c. Greenville used in combination with President Gibson registration stamps (Monrovia & Buchanan), as well as later associated usages providing broader postal context. Condition is mixed, as expected for commercial material of the period, though generally fine. A useful and scarce assembly, offering insight into the practical postal application of this difficult and short-lived issue (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6)

4233 cover image1921: Overprint Issues on Registered Covers. An attractive and scarce group of four registered covers bearing the "1921" overprint in black, a series that is notably elusive. Most noteable is a commercial envelope bearing 5 c., 10 c., and 10 c. registration (Robertsport) from Monrovia to Hamburg, Germany; genuine postal use particularly rare. Also three covers addressed to Erich Parche in Plainfield, New Jersey, and shows a variety of frankings incorporating the 1921 overprinted adhesives, all tied by Monrovia datestamp. Such material is significantly less common than mint examples, and genuinely used covers, especially in multiple frankings, are seldom encountered. Condition is typical for commercial registered mail of the period, with some edge wear, light creasing, and minor staining noted, but overall the group remains sound and highly presentable (Image 1) (Image 2)
