1893/1904: Provisional Surcharge Issues on the Palm 6 c. blue-green, specialised study and reconstruction group presented upon eight exhibition pages, comprising an extensive assembly of unused 1893, 5 c.
surcharge issue as well as the Official overprint issue with sheets of 40, multiples, positional blocks and identified constant varieties (including short flag "5", non-serif "5s", and "i" dot omitted), together with a remarkable continuation in the
1904, provisional surcharges 1 c. on 5 c. on 6 c. (“ONE”, “O.S.”, etc.) on the same underlying stamp. The group includes unused complete sheets of the 1904 1c on 5c on 6c (Ordinary), inverted overprint, and Official "O.S." surcharge, in addition to
singles, multiples and sheets of 40 illustrating the principal surcharge types and errors. The material clearly demonstrates the persistence of underlying cliché varieties across successive surcharge issues, offering exceptional scope for plating and
research. A highly instructive and visually impressive study tracing the evolution and repeated use of the same base stamp through multiple provisional issues. While individual stamps are modestly catalogued, such a cohesive and structured assembly;
particularly with multiple complete sheets and positional material; is rarely encountered intact and represents significant philatelic importance. Ideal for specialist study or exhibition development (Image 1)

Second Pictorial Issue 1897: Specialised Waterlow reference collection. An extensive and highly specialised six-page study from the Waterlow reference material, comprising: Waterlow UPU Specimens, 1897 set
complete 1 c. to 50 .c, with black non-serif “SPECIMEN” handstamps (18 × 2.5 mm), additional 1900 UPU specimen values (1 c. to 5 c.) with smaller format handstamps, Portuguese UPU specimen overprints “ULTRAMAR / SPECIMEN” on 1 c. and 5 c., including
pairs affixed to card, a representative group of Waterlow “CANCELLED” archival specimens (Types 1-3, 1897-1905), including pairs on laid paper and later printings illustrating differing handstamp formats, and a comprehensive showing of the issued
1897-1906 definitive series, including major colour and perforation variations, with identified shades, printings (1900, 1903, 1905), the distinctive 5 c. inverted centre variety, group of 7 unused blocks of four (5 c.,10 c., 15 c., 20 c., 25 c., 30
c. & 50 c.), and Official Service overprints “O S” 1897-1905, well represented with different printings and perforations. A valuable and instructive assembly illustrating the production, distribution and archival handling of the 1897 pictorial
issue, from specimen distribution through to issued printings. The odd fault, or minor imperfection in places, as to be expected of archival and reference material. Fine and scarce (Image 1)

Second Pictorial Issue 1897: Group of ten small Die Proofs printed in black on thick paper from the Printer’s Working set, comprising values: 1 c., 5 c., 10 c., 20 c., 25 c. and 30 c., all from re-engraved dies, together with
2 c. and 50 c. from new dies, each with manuscript die numbers, including Nos. 1453A, 1452B, 1454A, 1456, 1457, 1458, 203, 23332, 2302 & 2301. These illustrate the re-engraving process whereby the 1897 issue values were derived from earlier 1892
dies, while the 2 c. and 50 c. were newly created. The group provides a comprehensive representation of the die proof series, including both reworked and entirely new designs. A rare and historically significant assembly; some faults, soiling, ink
spotting, smudging and traces of water exposure (WWII period) as characteristic for this archival group, nevertheless of great importance for the study of the issue and its production. Provenance: Collection Dr. Roy P. Mackal (Image 1)

Inland Postage 1897: 3 c. rose & green, an extensive and specialised assembly comprising mint and used examples, presented upon eight pages and a selection of loose items, including multiples, varieties and
postal history, including both issued and unissued types. The group includes Die I perf. 14 “13 pearls” examples in singles and a fine block of four, together with a range of shades and papers including darker printings and a noted double impression.
A further selection of the De La Rue printings showing the unissued “10 pearls” type, including imperforate vertical multiples and blocks, as well as the scarce “mustard yellow” printing (13 pearls) prepared but not issued, also a sheet of 50. Postal
history well represented with a useful group of cards and covers, including uprated usages, combinations with later issues, and foreign destinations, showing Monrovia despatch cds and a range of transit and receiving markings, registered incomination
with 3 c. postal stationery, including Europe and the United States. Notable items include multiple-franked usages paying correct rates, and mixed frankings illustrating the transitional period of use and a double rate local cover from Greenville. A
valuable and highly instructive study group of this short-lived and complex issue, offering excellent scope for further research and exhibition development (Image 1)

1901: “ORDINARY” handstamps on 1892/97 Issues, comprehensive study group on five exhibition pages, comprising 54 examples, including Types I-III including varieties, and on "OFFICIAL" and “O S” overprints, and a
wide range of values from 1 c. to $5. The group includes: Type I, II and III “ORDINARY” overprints, showing clear differences in typeset, spacing and inclination, Handstamped “O S” issues, including inverted and double varieties, multiple values
across the definitive series, including 1 c. to 50 c. and to $5, double “O S”, and combination overprints, cancellations including Buchanan CTO and Monrovia usages, a page of Type I on "O S" from 1 c. to $2. Additionally a 32 c. (Scott 90) used with
a 2010 APS certificate (not listed as used in Scott) A valuable reference and study group, illustrating the complex and controversial nature of these provisional issues, believed to represent an attempt to utilise surplus Official stamps for postal
use. As noted in the accompanying research, usage is rare and forgeries are known, and these issues remain poorly understood and under-catalogued - some not listed in Scott. An excellent basis for further study or specialist exhibition (Image 1)

Official Stamps $1 ultramarine & black surcharged '75 c.' in red, good colour and perforations, used on an official registered cover from Monrovia to Boston, U.S.A., dated 30 May 1905, tied by attractive “MONROVIA LIBERIA
MAY 30 1905” datestamp in violet, with oval "R" handstamp in matching colour, addressed to Mr. Chas Hall Adams, Liberian Consulate General, Boston, Massachusetts. Reverse with red wax seal “POST OFFICE LIBERIA”, London registered transit “22 JU 05”
and Boston registered receiving “JUL 2 1905”. Some edge wear, vertical crease well clear of adhesive and minor staining consistent with postal use, but a remarkable and highly important cover. The franking represents thirteen times the 5 c. single
rate, correctly paying a heavy registered official letter. The only recorded solo use of the 75 c. on $1 surcharge on cover; only three usages on cover recorded in total. An exhibition-class rarity of Liberian philately and one of the key items of

1902: A highly specialised and visually impressive unused exhibition-style collection of Liberia provisional surcharge issues from 1902 to 1915, with strong emphasis on positional studies, overprint types, and
rare varieties, including numerous multiples and sheets. The collection begins with the 1902 Fourth Provisional Surcharge Issue (75 c. on $1), featuring an exceptional sheet of ten displaying the scarce “thin C & comma” setting, accompanied by
positional pairs and notable inverted overprint varieties, including a used Monrovia example (23 April 1906). This issue is noted as some of the rarest in Liberian philately. The 1915 Red Cross surcharge (+2 c. on 3c Inland Postage) is represented in
depth, including both Die I and Die II, tête-bêche combinations, a double die example, and an outstanding block of eight showing a combination of double dies and “broken 2” varieties, illustrating the complexity of the hand-applied overprinting
process. A further section covers the Eleventh Provisional Surcharge Issue, again with Die I and II distinctions, tête-bêche formats, broken figures, and a block of eight including a double-die pairing, providing excellent study material for plating
and overprint analysis. The 1903 Fifth Provisional Surcharge Issue (10 c., 15 c., 20 c. on 1892 issues) includes singles and an impressive complete sheet of the 10 c. surcharge, together with full sheets of the 15 c. and 20 c. values, the latter
showing the noted variety with short crossbars on both “T’s” of “TWENTY”. Also included is the 1904 “ONE”, “TWO”, and “2” cent surcharge group, highlighted by 2 c. on 4 c. Official in both single and block of four, alongside a valuable group of
errors including double overprints, surcharge on reverse, and surcharges on incorrect bases (ordinary & double official). The collection concludes with the controversial 1914 Tenth Provisional Surcharge Issue (2 c., 5 c., 10 c., 20 c. on
1906/1909 issues), including both ordinary and Official stamps, singles, pairs and multiples. This issue, associated with Bela Sekula, is represented with a range of values including blocks and overprinted Officials, and is noted for its philatelic
rather than postal usage, with multiples described as extremely rare. Condition throughout is generally fine to very fine, with many fresh multiples and well-preserved sheets; some minor faults consistent with large-format material. A remarkable and
comprehensive specialised holding (Image 1)

Inland Postage Issue 1910/12: Commerce with Caduceus "3 Cents Inland Postage" surcharge on the 10 c. triangular issue. A substantial and specialised unused collection-study group comprising an exceptional range of
issued stamps, proofs, colour trials, perforation and roulette varieties, Official Service stamps, and rare production anomalies, fresh colour throughout and large part og. (where applicable), fine examples, neatly mounted and written-up on four
exhibition pages. The lot includes pre-production surcharge colour trials with Official Service “OS” overprints in imperforate and perforated formats, black-on-black and black-on-blue trial combinations, together with issued Ordinary and Official
stamps in imperforate, roulette 7½, roulette 13, perf 12½, perf 14 and compound perforation formats. Also included are scarce and unusual varieties such as surcharge shifted, surcharge inverted 90 degrees, double overprints, imperforate-between
pairs, imperforate-on-margin pieces, mis-perforations, and examples without the “OS” overprint, considered by the exhibitor to represent unissued Official material. A particularly impressive feature is the inclusion of large multiples and positional
pieces, notably a roulette 13 block of sixteen, together with a range of mint and CTO examples illustrating the complexity of the issue and the provisional production methods employed by Perkins Bacon during the inland postage period. An outstanding
research and exhibition assembly of one of Liberia’s most intricate provisional surcharge issues, demonstrating the full evolution from proof and trial stages through to issued stamps and major production varieties. Material of this depth and
specialist character is seldom encountered intact. An exceptional basis for further study or advanced exhibition development (Image 1)

Inland Postage Issue 1910/12: Commerce with Caduceus 3 c. on 10 c., exceptional pre-production alignment trial sheet, comprising a large multiple sheet of fourty units of the triangular vignette impressions in blue,
overprinted diagonally in red "3 CENTS INLAND POSTAGE" with "OS", the entire sheet showing the setting used for positioning of both surcharge and official overprint, notably with the sheet incorrectly rotated during the trial process, resulting in
the distinctive diagonal and inverted relationships across the impressions; fresh colour and well preserved for such a production item. An important and highly unusual piece of Liberian philatelic production material, far removed from ordinary issued
stamps or proofs, representing a working-stage trial used to establish alignment of multiple overprint elements. Such sheets were not intended for distribution and rarely survive. Of considerable significance to the specialist, demonstrating the
mechanics of surcharge application and official overprinting in early 20th-century Liberian issues. A striking and exhibition-worthy item (Image 1)

1913: The remarkable “8 Cents” provisional surcharge issue on the 1897 3 c. Inland Postage stamps, an extraordinary specialised study mounted on seven exhibition pages, comprising an essay, trial proofs, issued
stamps, shade studies, major errors, multiples and postal history, including rare Die I and Die II material throughout. The collection begins with a rare “5 Cent” essay for the proposed surcharge issue, followed by exceptional pre-production
material, including a large alignment trial proof block from a misaligned Die II sheet used in testing the “8 / Star / 8” overprints, with red frame lines printed on the reverse, accompanied by rare trial strips showing inverted and displaced
overprints. Issued material includes imperforate and perforated examples in multiple shades, positional blocks, inverted varieties, scarce Die II printings with the “10 Pearls” setting, and an extensive range of production and surcharge errors,
including double and triple surcharges, imperforate-between varieties, off-centre backgrounds and double red frame lines. Particularly notable is the Money Order Bureau cancel of 30 March 1914, described as one of only five recorded postmarks. The
study concludes with two rare registered covers from Monrovia to Henry L. Hayman in London, demonstrating commercial and philatelic usages of the 8 c. provisional surcharge issue during the brief 1913/14 rate period. An outstanding and probably
unique exhibition study of one of Liberia’s most complex provisional surcharge issues. The breadth of surviving production material, essays, proofs, varieties and postal history represented here is exceptional, and the assembly would form the
centrepiece of any advanced Liberia or worldwide provisional surcharge collection (Image 1)
