Pictorial Issue 1892/94: Waterlow Sample Stamps, Types IV–VI, selection of twenty-four examples on exhibition pages including values from 4 c. to $5 and 5 c. triangular "O S", overprinted in black “WATERLOW &
SONS LTD / SPECIMEN” (two different settings), showing reduced letter size, closer line spacings (approx. 1-2 mm), settings 1 including “S” under “L”, together with later Type VI issues featuring security punch holes and ungummed except for the

Second Pictorial Issue 1897: Progressive Die Proofs on thick paper. Composite die proof showing the 20 c. and 30 c. values, printed in black (128 x 113 mm.), illustrating early stages of the re-engraving, with background
shading incomplete at the base of the designs; manuscript date "14 Sept. 1896" and numbers "1456" and "1458". A scarce and instructive pre-production Proof sheet, documenting the development of the Liberia pictorial issue. Minor handling
imperfections as to be expected for working material. Note: The 1897 issue consisted of nine values, with seven in multiples of 5 c. to better correspond to the new rates of 1893. Old dies were re-engraved, and two new dies were made. The values of 1
c., 5 c., 10 c., 15 c., 20 c., 25 c. and 30 c. were made by re-engraving the 6 c., 4 c., 8 c., 12 c., 16 c., 24 c. and 32 c. dies of 1892, respectively. The 2 c. and 50 c. values were made from new dies. Scott catalogue list these stamps as two
separate issues of 1896 and 1897, but the dated Die Proofs and Archival File Copy Sheets define these stamps as one order, one issue, in 1897. Provenance: Collection Dr. Roy P. Mackal (Image 1)
