Third transfer printing 1867: 12 c., Plate Proof in red on ungummed thin white paper, the value indication crossed out in black ink and replaced with manuscript "six", fresh colour and large margins all round. A superb and
remarkable Proof; one of just three recorded examples. Note: Of the three such Proofs with value altered by hand recorded to date one is in the Tapling Collection at the British Library and two were included in this exhibit. The manuscript
handwriting is consistent across all three recorded examples and attributed to the printer. Provenance: Walter Dorning Beckton; Lincoln Nirk; and V.F. Jansen (1931) (Image 1)

Third transfer printing 1867: Group of four plate proofs on thin, silky paper without gum with 6 c. blue, 12 c. red, 12 c. green and 12 c. black, mounted as arranged in the original collection on small part album page of
Walter Dorning Beckton. These proofs represent an early stage in the production of Liberia’s classic issue, printed on trial paper distinct from the standard wove proofs, and retained in their contemporary album context, with manuscript annotation
“1867” and notes relating to perforation trials. The page is accompanied by Beckton’s annotation referring to a “12 c. perforation trial proof”, subsequently affixed to the page, indicating direct engagement with production experiments of the issue.
A remarkable and highly unusual survival: trial proofs on experimental paper, original 19th-century part album page, and distinguished provenance from one of the great early philatelic collectors. Material of this nature is rarely encountered intact,
and is far scarcer than the more commonly offered Liberia trial proofs on standard paper. A significant exhibition piece. Note: Walter Dorning Beckton (1866-1931) was a prominent British philatelist, recognised as a pioneer of "scientific philately"
and a leading figure in the early 20th-century philatelic world. Provenance: Collection Walter Dorning Beckton (Image 1)

Selections; Third transfer printing 1867: Unused selection with a range of perforations, shades including scarce 12 c. deep dull-blue, examples of all three values on thin silky paper and including 12 c. deep
turquoise blue imperf. to sheet margin at base, in a horizontal pair perf. to sheet margin at left or in a heavily misperforated strip of three (reconstructed) and 24 c. dull yellowish green in a horizontal and a vertical pair, the latter corner

Third transfer printing 1867: The remarkable used collection with 6 c. pale red, perf. 12 (4) including two examples on small piece, 12 c. deep dull-blue (6), one example imperf. to sheet margin at left and two
perf. 11½ and finally 24 c. dull yellowish green, one of only six known used examples, all lightly cancelled by blue "MONROVIA / LIBERIA" handstamp. A very rare assembly, remarkably representing just over a third of all 32 used examples recorded of
the third transfer printing which is known used only from Monrovia (Image 1)

Fourth transfer printing 1868: 6 c. red, on watermarked paper, perf 11½, horizontal corner marginal strip of six with marginal selvedge top and right, partial papermaker´s watermark, of fresh colour, large part og., toning in
places to reverse, minor wrinkles, crease in margin at top right and perforation separtion in top margin to two stamps, otherwise superb. A scarce and visually striking multiple from the Fourth Transfer Printing, showing consistent impressions across
the strip. Multiples of this issue are rarely encountered in such format, particularly on watermarked paper and retaining gum. An attractive and important exhibition piece, for Liberia specialists and collectors of classic West Africa, combining
rarity, condition, and notable pedigree. Provenance: Collection Charles Lathrop Pack; Collection Philip Cockrill (Image 1)

Fourth transfer printing 1868: 6 c. light red, compound perforation 11½x12, unused irregular corner marginal block of five, showing sheet margin and guide perforation intersections, of good colour, some tone spots to large
part og. as to be expected for multiples of this size and period. An attractive positional multiple illustrating the layout and perforation characteristics of the Fourth Transfer Printing. Such marginal and irregular blocks are seldom encountered. A
fine and scarce piece of clear specialist interest (Image 1)

Fourth transfer printing 1868: 6 c. red, perf. 11½, the unique complete sheet of thirty-two, fresh colour and full sheet-margins all round, unused, large part og. The odd trivial age spot and slight creasing to the selvedge of
no importance to this great rarity. The sole surviving sheet of this stamp, a valuable resource for the plating of the Liberty issues and an exhibition item of the hightest calibre. Provenance: Collection Charles Lathrop Pack; Collection Lothar von

Fourth transfer printing 1868: The complete sheet reconstruction consisting of thirty-two unused single stamps in a variety of shades and perforations, two with sheet margin at base, mainly fresh and often vibrant colour,
large part og. The odd toned example or minor fault, nevertheless in very good general condition. An interesting and very uncommon plate reconstruction. Provenance: Collection Lothar von Saleski (Image 1)

Fourth transfer printing 1868: 12 c. deep dull blue, a specialised assembly of unused marginal multiples comprising a top marginal strip of three (perf. 12), left and bottom marginal pairs (perf. 11½), and a large
left marginal strip of eight (perf. approx. 11×11½), the latter large part og. and mostly never hinged. A highly attractive and instructive group illustrating perforation variations and sheet format of this difficult issue. An excellent study page
with strong visual appeal (Image 1)

1868: Liberty Fourth Transfer Printing, 24 c. dull yellowish green, perf. 11×12, an unused side marginal strip of four, of fresh colour, showing a series of distinct and constant plate flaws including from left to right; "dot
under S", "white flaw beneath the seat", " white flaw behind the figure", and "flaw affecting the left eye". Right stamp has fault top right side, otherwise very fine, large part og. A remarkable and instructive multiple from the late Liberty issue,
illustrating plate characteristics of this difficult printing. Provenance: Charles Lathrop Pack; Collection Philip Cockrill (Image 1)
