First transfer printing 1860: 6 c. red in combination with second transfer printing 1864 24 c. light green used on 1865 cover front to Kenosha, Wisconsin each lightly cancelled by circular "MONROVIA / LIBERIA" handstamp in
blue. Carried by African Steamship Company packet to Liverpool with red "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET / 9 FE 65 / 4A" transit also lightly tying the adhesives and thence by Allan Line steamer 'Nova Scotian' to Portland and overland via the exchange
office at Chicago with "CHICAGO AM. PKT. / PAID / FEB 26" transit in red to Kenosha. Fully pre-paid at the 33 Cent rate under the 1858 convention with the balance of 3 cents settled in cash, of which Liberia retained 2 cents and credited '1/3½' d.to
Great Britain in red crayon who in turn credited 16 c. for the carriage by American packet under the 1848 Anglo-American convention plus 5 c. US inland postage as denoted by red '21 / CENTS' credit handstamp to the United States. The stamps somewhat
toned, the front with a few minor tears and overall ageing. A rare and interesting mixed franking of the first and second printing. Cert. PE (2025). Reference: Unlisted in John Sacher's 2010 census, bringing the total number of franked pre-UPU covers
to eighteen (Image 1)

First transfer printing 1860: 12 c. deep blue used on small pink 1864 cover from Buchanan, Grand Bassa to London, neatly cancelled by black straightline "PAID" of Buchanan (Cockrill: Type PD.1). Fully pre-paid at the 12 cent
rate to Great Britain under the 1858 Anglo-Liberian convention made up of 1 d. (= 2 c.) to Liberia, 4 d. ship fee and 1 d. British inland postage and carried by West African Steamship Company packet to Liverpool with red "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR.
PACKET / 11 NO. 64 / 2A" transit on obverse and London (12 Nov.) arrival on reverse. A few minutely toned perfs. and some wrinkles to cover of no significance to this charming and exceptionally rare usage; one of just two recorded covers sent from
Buchanan. Cert. PE (2025). Reference: Illustrated in: John Sacher "Liberia: The early Post Offices and Stamps, The London Philatelist, Vol. 101, Nov. 1992, p. 324. Provenance: Collection John Sacher, Spink, London December 2016, lot 1393 (Image 1)

First transfer printing 1860: 12 c. blue used on a delightful advertising envelope for "A. F. Nelson / Commission / and Shipping Merchant / CAPE PALMAS / LIBERIA, W. C. AFRICA" adressed to a shipping underwriter in Liverpool,
attractively cancelled by manuscript 'M' in brown ink (Cockrill: MS.1) to indicate posting on a costal vessel between Monrovia and Harper and then carried by British West African Steamship Company packet to Liverpool with red "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR.
PACKET / 26 DE 73 / 3A" arrival on obverse. Fully pre-paid under the 1858 convention with 2 c. for Liberia, 8 c. ship fee to Great Britain and 2 c. internal postage, the amount pre-paid also indicated in sterling as '6d.' in red ink. The sole
manuscript cancellation recorded on cover and one of only two franked pre-UPU entires to Great Britain; a unique and immensly charming entire for the connoisseur. Cert. PE (2025). Note: John Sacher's 2010 census records this cover as one of two known
to the United Kingdom franked with postage stamps and the only private use of a postage stamp in the 'stampless' period between 1868 and 1881. Reference: Illustrated in: Philip Cockrill, "Liberia: The internal Postmarks & Cancellations", p. 6 and

First transfer printing 1860: The unique 12 c. deep blue and 24 c. green (2) combination used on 1861 entire to Boston, Mass. endorsed "pr. Steamer via England" and "Paid", all cancelled "HARPER / LIBERIA" in black (Cockrill:
Type CP.1) with indistinct straightline "PAID" on reverse. Carried at double rate by West African Steamship Company packet to Liverpool with red "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET / 11 OC. 61 / 5A" transit on obverse and thence by Cunard steamer 'Africa'
to Boston with clear black "BOSTON BR. PKT. / OCT. 26" arrival also on front. Though fully pre-paid at the 66 Cent double rate with the balance of 6 Cents settled in cash, Liberia only credited the single rate of '1/3½d.' in brown ink to Great
Britain, where the cover nevertheless seems to have been accepted as fully paid though no credit to the US was indicated, and thus '10' Cents double rate inland postage charged on arrival. A breathtakingly fresh and attractive entire showing the sole
recorded 12 c. blue and 24 c. green combination; an exhibition item of the highest stature. Cert. PE (2025). Reference: Recorded in: John Sacher, "Liberia - Prepayment of Mail in the 19th Century", The London Philatelist, Vol. 119, June 2010, p. 162

First transfer printing 1860: 24 c. green used on 1871 cover front to the Liberian Consul General in Paris, France endorsed "Maison Executif, Monrovia", lightly cancelled by circular "MONROVIA / LIBERIA" handstamp in blue with
a further strike alongside with blue straightline "PAID" (Cockrill: Type PD.1) in centre. Carried by British West African Steamship Company packet to Great Britain with "LONDON / 8 / PAID / A 2 SP 71" transit and british "PD", both in red, and onward
to France with "ANGL. / AMB. CALAIS A / 2 SEPT. 71" entry mark also on front and at 24 cent fully pre-paid under the 1858 Anglo-Liberian convention with 1 d. (=2 c.) to Liberia, 4 d. ship fee, 1 d. transit to Great Britain and '6' d. credited to
France in red crayon. The stamp lifted and three perforations added at base as well as the merest hint of a wrinkle. A rare usage full of postal history, being one of three known usages during the thirteen year period between 1868 and 1881 when
stamps where not generally available and combining this with a rare destination. Signed Georges Scherrer, cert. PE (2025). Note: It is presumed that after a burglary at the Liberian treasury in February 1868 all stamps were withdrawn from sale and
declared invalid to prevent the fraudulent use of stolen stamps. While John Sacher's 2010 census lists nine covers (partially) pre-paid by postage stamps up to 1868 the use of stamps then falls drastically in early 1868 and does not resume until the
early 1880s. Sacher records only three exceptions during this thirteen year period, of which he writes: "The first two of these exceptions were from the 'Maison Executif' and 'Department of State Monrovia', presumably both official letters. Probably
the senders considered themselves outside the regulations if they still had stamps to use". The same census recordes only three pre-UPU franked covers to France. Reference: Illustrated in: John Sacher, "Liberia: The Early Post Offices and Stamps",

to the UK, 1 d. UK transit and 8 d. for transatlantic carriage by British vessel under the 1848 Anglo-American convention and struck with red "5 / CENTS" credit to the US. A very rare entire. Cert. PE (2025). Reference: Listed in: John Sacher,

Collections Liberty Issue 1860: An outstanding specialised assembly of Plate Proofs for the 6 c., 12 c. and 24 c. values, comprising approximately 186 proofs in black, blue, green and red, arranged as an attempted
reconstruction of the original sheet format of 32 subjects (8 x 4). The group includes substantial reconstructed plate layouts for each value, with multiple positional pieces, pairs, strips and larger fragments, mounted on album pages and annotated
with plating notes. The proofs show the allegorical seated Liberty design in differing values and colours, illustrating the development and production of Liberia’s first postage issue. Condition varies, as to be expected with proof material of this
type, with some pieces cut close, though many are fresh and clearly printed. A remarkable and highly unusual research assembly, representing a major effort to reconstruct the original plates of Liberia’s 1860 first issue. A rare opportunity to
acquire a substantial classic proof study of considerable philatelic importance, with excellent scope for further plating, research and exhibition development (Image 1)
