5029 cover imageThe Waghorn Organisation 1839 (Oct 16): Entire letter from Thomas Waghorn & Co. in Alexandria (the entire written by N. De Pothamier) to A. O'Reilly, Managing Director of the "Times" Newspaper in Paris, France struck on despatch with "ALEXANDRIE / EGYPTE" cds (Oct 17) in black of French P.O.; probably carried on the French steamer "Tancrede" from Alexandria via Malta where disinfected with slits and struck with circular "PURIFIE AU LAZARET / MALTE" cachet in black and thence to Marseilles, with Paris arrival (Nov 5) on reverse and charged "20" décimes to pay. A fascinating letter: "Mr. Waghorn left here for Malta on the 13th instant, on board the Pasha's Steamer "Generoso" which vessel, after incalculable difficulties, and in direct opposition to British Officials here, he eventually succeeded in procuring from the Egyptian Government, for the conveyance of Mails from India per "Berenice" with dates from Bombay up to the 12 September, and the Mails per "Waterwitch" schooner up to 13 July. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr. Waghorn for his exertions on behalf of the commercial interests of England, as we can confidently confirm that were it not for him, these mails, which were of the utmost importance, would have been at this moment in Alexandria. There is a report in the town that the Turkish Fleet is making preparations to sail to Constantinople - we won't believe it until we see them safely out of the harbour" (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

5079 cover imageWaghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1838 (July 16): Entire letter from Calcutta to Morrison Cryder & Co. in London endorsed "per Steamer via Bombay", with reverse showing framed "CALCUTTA / STEAM LETTER / PAID" in red (July 16) and rated in manuscript "15 annas" for internal rate to Bombay, struck with oval framed "Care of Mr. Waghorn / Suez" in black with manuscript "366, PR / SS & Co." of Samuel Smith & Co, Waghorn's Calcutta Agents (Sidebottom type 3) and rectangular framed "INDIA" in red. From Bombay (Aug 1), the cover was carried by the EIC "Atalanta" not to Suez as advertised in the Press but instead went via the Persian Gulf - where this Mail was plundered by Arab marauders - see attached email from the doyen of this area of collecting, Jochen Heddergott, enclosed with this lot. Eventually some of the Mail reached Alexandria where handed to the French P.O. and struck with "Alexandrie / Egypte" cds (Sept 27) with framed "INDIES ORIEN / PAR / ALEXANDRIE" alongside and oval "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERRANÉE" in red. Carried on the "Rhamses" to Syra from there on the "Sesostris" (Oct 1) to Malta where disinfected and struck with circular "PURIFIÉ LAZARET / MALTE" in black, thence on the "Eurotas" to Marseille with Paris transit in blue (Oct 15) and London arrival (Oct 17) in black and framed "BRITISH / FOREIGN" in black showing charge due of 3s. 8d. British Postage + 3s 9d. French Postage in manuscript for a letter under ½ ounce with enclosure, with a total charge of 7/5d. due to pay. A superb and extremely important entire. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 93 days, roughly a month late. Note 2: Interesting contents "We are anxiously awaiting the results of Colonel Benson's mission to Ava on which rests the alternative of peace or war with the Burmese. From Bombay (Sept 12), the cover was carried by the EIC "Berenice" to Suez arriving (Sept 30), and transferred to French P.O. and struck with "Alexandrie / Egypte" cds (Oct 7) with framed "INDIES ORIEN / PAR / ALEXANDRIE" alongside and oval "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERRANÉE" in red over the boxed "India". Carried on the "HMS Blazer" to Malta where disinfected with slits and with circular "PURIFIÉ LAZARET / MALTE" in black, from there on the "Confiance" (Oct 16) to Marseilles. Paris cds in blue (Oct 27) and London arrival (Oct 29) in black and framed "BRITISH / FOREIGN" in black showing charge due of 3s. 8d. British Postage + 3s 9d. French Postage in manuscript for a letter under ½ ounce with enclosure, with a total charge of 7/5d. due to pay. A scarce and fine entire. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 68 days. Note 2: The interesting point to note is that the French P.O. conveyed the letter from Alexandria to Dover, but used a British Packet from Malta to Marseilles, This was the first voyage of a British vessel on this route and the improved reliability of the service soon undermined Waghorn's ability to act effectively as a Mail Forwarding Agent; from here on he turned increasingly to passengers and freight forwarding. Struck with superb framed "To the care of / Mr. WAGHORN" in black (Sidebottom type 10) numbered "168" displaying well on reverse and oval "INDIA" in red applied in Bombay. Carried on the, EIC "Berenice" which departed from Bombay (Sept 13) arrived at Suez (Oct 6) and transferred to the French Post Office where struck with small cartridge "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERANÉE". The Mails from the "Berenice" were then taken by Thomas Waghorn himself aboard the Pasha's Steamer "Generoso" (in direct opposition from the British Officials in Alexandria) which departed Alexandria (Oct 13), together with the Mails from Calcutta which had been carried by the Schooner "Waterwitch" to Malta, the Mails travelled on from Malta after quarantine with Waghorn aboard the "Generoso", with Marseille arrival (Oct 25) and thence to Lyon with unclear arrival cds but docketed internally Oct 28th. and charged "16" décimes due. A remarkable and extraordinary entire marked to travel by the French P.O. but instead due to the lateness of the sailings carried privately by Thomas Waghorn: a cover of great beauty and of considerable rarity. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 77 days. Note 2: See Colin Tabeart "Admiralty Mediterranean Steam Packets" page 58. Note 3: See also the letter from N. de Pothamier offered under the "Waghorn Organisation" section earlier in this sale. Provenance: Collection Max Uehlinger, London, 12 March 1997, lot 15 (Image 1) (Image 2)

5089 cover imageWaghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1839 (Aug 25): Entire letter from Calcutta to Bordeaux, France endorsed at top "Via Bombay & Egypt", struck on despatch with rare oval "Care of / Mr. T Waghorn / Suez" with 'T' in black (Sidebottom type 3a), endorsed with Waghorn charge of "1 rupee" and numbered "298" and signed by a clerk for Samuel Smith & Co., Waghorn's Agents; with reverse showing fine "STEAM POSTAGE "9" / INLAND Do. "15" for a total of 1 rupee 8 annas for up to ¾ tola in weight and the obverse bearing rectangular framed "INDIA" in red of Calcutta. The cover appears to have been delayed in India and caught the EIC "Euphrates" from Bombay (Sept 27), thence via French P.O. in Alexandria with framed "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERRANÉE" in red and carried from Alexandria (Oct 30) on "HMS Hermes" to Malta and from there on "HMS Mageara" to Marseille arriving on date of Marseille cds (Nov 10). Bordeaux arrival cds (Nov 13) alongside and charged "19" décimes due to pay. A fine strike of this rare marking (both Sidebottom and Smith record just two usages), however it appears one or two more have surfaced as this is not one of the known dates of use of this cachet. Superb. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 79 days. Provenance: Coillection Max Uehlinger, Christie's, London, 12 March 1997, lot 16 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

5090 cover imageWaghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1839 (Sept 2): Entire letter from Madras to Leghon (Livorno), Italy, struck on reverse with framed "MADRAS / Paid" and rated "1½ rupees" and by octagonal framed "MADRAS / STEAM LETTER / Paid" rated the same with "1 rupee 8 annas" both in red, with very fine "MADRAS No. "50" / CARE OF MR. WAGHORN / SUEZ" handstamp in black (Sidebottom type 9). Oval Bombay "INDIA" handstamp in red on obverse. The "Berenice" which departed from Bombay (Sept 13) arrived at Suez (Oct 6) and transferred to the French Post Office where struck with small cartridge "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERANÉE" in red. The Mails from the EIC "Berenice" were then taken by Thomas Waghorn himself aboard the Pasha's Steamer "Generoso" (in direct opposition from the British Officials in Alexandria) which departed Alexandria (Oct 13), together with the Mails from Calcutta which had been carried by the Schooner "Waterwitch" to Malta, however it is unclear how the Mails travelled from Malta but this cover shows arrival in Marseille (Oct 25) and thence to Livorno with arrival in black (Oct 30) and charged 5 lire, 10 centesemi in manuscript due to pay. A remarkable and extraordinary entire marked to travel by the French P.O. but instead due to the lateness of the sailings carried privately by Thomas Waghorn: A cover of great beauty and of considerable rarity - a very rare "Waghorn" cover addressed to Italy. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 59 days. Note 2: See Colin Tabeart "Admiralty Mediterranean Steam Packets" page 58.
