Combination of Forwarder Services and Italian Shipmail from Beirut 1871 (Jan 21): Letter sheet from Beirut with forwarder to Alexandria, from there with Italian vessel to Genua, without despatch date, struck by "GSELL &
BIRCHER ALEXANDRIE D'EGYPTE" forwarder handstamp, given to the Italian post office in Alexandria, franked with Italy Torino printing 40 c. red-carmine (Sassone T20), tied by '234' grill numeral of the Alexandria post office. Struck alongside with
"ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO / POSTE ITALIANE 21 GEN 71” cds. Reverse with BRINDISI transit and GENOVA arrival (Jan 27) cds's. An exceptional cover, only four covers with this combination known. Note: Before opening a British post office in Beirut on 20
March 1873, mail from Beirut to Italy could be delivered in one of several ways. The French services had been strongly reduced during the Franco-Prussian War, see Salles part II on page 242-243. Austrian or Russian shiplines were active in an
undisturbed way. Alternatively a vessel of the Egyptian fleet could have taken mail from its office in Beirut and bring it to Alexandria between July 1870 to February 1872. Or alternatively using a forwarder service to Alexandria as in this case (Image 1)

Russian P.O. in Alexandria 1863 (April 5): Entire letter from Marseille via Alexandria and Alexandretta to Aleppo, written 28 March 1863, struck in transit by extremely rare three-line „COMPAGNIE RUSSE / ALEXANDRIE d’Egypte /
24 / 5 Avril 1863” datestamp (unrecorded in Tchilinghirian / Smith fig. 1b) with sender’s cachet and oval “Dumreigger Freres & Co. / Alexandrie / Egypte” forwarder’s cachet all in blue alongside. Inside archive note gives April 14 as receiving
date. One of two covers recorded with this cancellation, one of the top pieces of the early postal history of Egypt or ROPiT, fine and most attractive, cert. Buchsbayew (2024). Note: When the Russian P.O. was opened in 1860 no (Imperial) stamps were
supplied. This earliest handstamp confirmed the Russian carrier from Alexandria. It had a local design differing from the framed ‘COMPAGNIE RUSSE’ handstamps in other Russian offices. Provenance: Liphschutz collection; Cihangir collection, Corinphila

ALEKSANDRIYA” datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig 256) in blue. Some foxing primarily at the letter's corner, fold crossing the corner of the adhesive, nevertheless a rare and spectacular usage for a British cover. Provenance: Collection Cengiz

Russian P.O. in Alexandria 1867ca: Undated envelope from Alexandria via Alexandretta to Aleppo, bearing ROPiT 1866 2 pi. blue & rose with good to large margins, tied in transit by rhomboid numeral in blue. Alongside two
clear „PORT ALEXANDRETTA 21 Nov“ cds’s in the same blue shade. Reverse with the very rare ornamental rectangular „ALEKSANDRIISK AGENTSVO XI / 20“ datestamp in blue. One of only two covers known with this Alexandria datestamp, unrecorded by
Tchilinghirian but illustrated in Peter Smith’s treatise on Egypt, pp. 117-18. Cert. Mikulsi (2000). Note: Interestingly, the ornamental datestamp of Alexandria has the sideways date with the month at right and the day at left, while the
corresponding ornamental of Alexandretta is oriented vice versa. Provenance: Liphschutz collection; Cihangir collection, Corinphila sale 121 (May 2000), lot 624 (Image 1)

1911 (Dec 8): Falkland Islands Victoria stationery postal card 1 d. carmine and question part of a 1 d. carmine response postal card, both handstamped below the indicium with 'South Georgia', cancelled with "SOUTH GEORGIA" cds
and directed to Wilhelm Lorenzen, on board of the S.S. "Deutschland" in Grytviken, South Georgia. Note: These cards are related to the Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911–1912) led by Wilhelm Filchner. The expedition ship was the three-masted
barque "Deutschland". Wilhelm Lorenzen was the first officer of the research vessel. After the original captain, Richard Vahsel, died of a serious illness in the Antarctic ice in August 1912, Lorenzen assumed command of the "Deutschland". Deep
animosity existed between Lorenzen, supported by some of the crew and scientists and the expedition leader, Wilhelm Filchner. This led to a full-blown mutiny in December 1912 in the port of Grytviken (South Georgia), during which Filchner was ousted
from command (Image 1)
